FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Dick Bumpas has been selected for the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame.
Bumpas is among 11 inductees that include Texas Rangers' pitcher Cliff Lee.
Bumpas was the 1970 Southwest Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a consensus All-America defensive tackle for Arkansas. He was a three-year letterman for the Razorbacks and a team captain.
After playing professionally, Bumpas began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Arkansas in 1977. The Fort Smith, Ark., native has been part of coaching staffs that have won championships in four different conferences. He has coached in 17 bowl games as well as serving as an assistant at all three service academies.
Bumpas and TCU head coach Gary Patterson have worked together at five different schools (Kansas State, Tennessee Tech, Utah State, Navy, TCU).
Three times in the last five years, including the last two seasons, Bumpas has been one of five finalists for the Frank Broyles Award, recognizing the nation's top assistant coach.
The Horned Frogs have led the nation in total defense each of the last two seasons.
In 2006, five of the 11 TCU defensive linemen were high school running backs. The Horned Frogs ranked second in the nation in run defense and total defense that year.
Bumpas mentored Jerry Hughes, who had never played defense until arriving at TCU, into a two-time consensus All-America defensive end and 2009 recipient of the Ted Hendricks Award and Lott Trophy.
