FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU rifle team will begin defense of their 2009-10 National Championship Saturday at the Ole Miss Invitational. There will be a wealth of experience on the firing line when the group takes aim for the first time this season as three out of the five members of the national championship group return this season. The two-day event runs through Sunday.
Sarah Scherer, Sarah Beard and Caitlin Morrissey headline the group of 10 shooters that will head to Ole Miss for the season-opening tournament. Scherer was crowned the 2009-10 smallbore National Champion, while the trio also helped the Horned Frogs claim the 2009-10 air rifle National Championship as well as the overall team championship.
The 2010-11 squad is young with just two upperclassmen, junior Mattie Brodgon and senior Alex Ferguson. The core group features six sophomores and two freshmen. The group of sophomores will need to take on the leadership that was lost with the graduation of four talented seniors in Erin Lorenzen, Lauren Sullivan, Simone Riford and Emily Paper.
TCU opened the 2009-10 campaign at the Ole Miss Invitational and came away with a first place finish out of 15 teams that competed.
