FORT WORTH—The TCU women's basketball team recently received two more preseason rankings from national magazines. The Frogs return eight letterwinners, including four starters, from last season's team that won the Mountain West Conference regular-season championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
National pundits have predicted big things from TCU in 2010-11 due in part to a returning nucleus featuring 2010 MWC Player of the Year and honorable-mention All-American Helena Sverrisdottir, first-team All-MWC selection Emily Carter, and Starr Crawford, who averaged nearly a double-double as a freshman a season ago. In the official Mountain West Conference preseason poll released last week, the squad received 16 of 21 first-place votes as the favorites to repeat as the MWC champion.
The Frogs, which already had been named No. 23 in the Sporting News' preseason Top 25, also have been rated No. 24 in Lindy's women's college basketball preview magazine. The latest recognition came from SportsPageMagazine.com, which rated the squad No. 21 for its highest predicted rating of the preseason. The publication said of the Frogs, "Carter, Sverrisdottir and Crawford are the straws that stir the Horned Frogs' drink. A promising freshman class should help in winning the Mountain West Conference."
Five of TCU's 2010-11 non-conference opponents also appear among the two sets of rankings. Lindy's features Oklahoma (No. 7), Texas A&M (No. 10), West Virginia (No. 17) and Georgia (No. 18), while SportsPageMagazine.com lists Texas A&M (No. 8), West Virginia (No. 9), Oklahoma (No. 14), Iowa State (No. 18) and Georgia (No. 19).
TCU tips off the 2010-11 regular season Friday, Nov. 12, with a 5:30 p.m. home matchup against Houston Baptist at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
