FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Agnes Kemboi and Festus Kigen both placed in the top 15 on Saturday to lead TCU at the 22nd running of the historic Chile Pepper Festival."We had a good day today on both sides," said distance coach Shawn Winget. "I thought both Agnes and Festus were very solid against some really good competition. They both are coming on as we head into the Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships in a couple of weeks. I thought both squads competed well today."
Overall, the TCU men placed 18th with 631 points, while the women finished 12th out of 56 schools with 401 points in the final team standings. Nationally ranked Oklahoma State won both team titles on Saturday at the Arkansas Cross Country Course.
Kemboi, a Kenya native, paced the Horned Frog women in the 5K, crossing the finish line in ninth-place with a personal-best time of 17:13.11. The ninth-place showing by Kemboi marked the third time in the last four years the Frogs have placed a student-athlete within the top 10 in Fayetteville. Kemboi's time currently sits No. 4 in the MWC standings heading into postseason competition. Fellow sophomore Tricia Terry followed Kemboi on Saturday, clocking a 32nd-place showing, which marked her highest finish of her career at the Chile Pepper Festival.
On the men's side, Kigen just missed placing in the top 10, finishing 13th overall in the men's 10K out of 463 competitors with a time of 29:50.28. Sophomore Alex De La Garza led the next group of Horned Frogs, recording a 46th-place finish in Fayetteville.
TCU will open postseason action at the 2010 MWC Cross Country Championships in Laramie, Wyo., on Friday, Oct. 29.
