Flyin' Frogs Dominate Lobo Challenge On Friday Night

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Mychal Dungey clocked an NCAA provisional on Friday night as the Flyin' Frogs dominated the Lobo Challenge inside the Albuquerque Convention Center."We got through the meet tonight and did some good things," said head coach Darryl Anderson. "Overall, we got some work in and competed well for the most part. We now just have to come back home and have two weeks of solid training. We will be a lot better in two weeks when we head to the Tyson Invitational."
Dungey, a junior from Austin, blazed to first-place honors in the men's 200 meters, winning with a personal-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 21.17 seconds. Dungey's time is currently No. 5 in the NCAA and No. 1 in the Mountain West Conference in 2010. It is also the 10th-fastest time recorded in program history. Fellow junior Matthew Love collected third-place in the event, winning heat No. 2 with a personal-best time of 21.68 seconds. Mark Barnes and Clemore Henry followed in fourth and fifth-place, respectively.
On the women's side, Teneshia Peart and Chaniqua Corinealdi placed first and second overall, respectively.
The Flyin' Frogs destroyed the final round of the men's 60 meters on Friday, capturing the first five spots in Albuquerque. Charles Silmon recorded first-place honors with a time of 6.80 seconds, just clipping Dungey at the line, who clocked a personal-best time of 6.81 seconds to earn runner-up accolades. Skye Dawson and Mark Barnes crossed the finish line in fourth and fifth, respectively, while OJ Stoneham clocked a fifth-place showing on Friday night.
In the prelims, Stoneham led the TCU contingency with a personal-best time of 6.82 seconds, while Dawson finished with the second-fastest preliminary time, recording a time of 6.83 seconds. Silmon, Dungey and Barnes rounded out the TCU qualifiers in preliminary action.
On the women's side, Peart captured first-place with a seasonal-best time of 7.52 seconds. Corinealdi placed third overall in the 60 meters with a personal-best time of 7.57 seconds.
In the men's 400 meters, Love, an Ohio native, just missed an NCAA provisional qualifying time, winning the event with a personal-best indoor time of 47.49 seconds. Henry collected runner-up accolades in the 400, clocking a personal and seasonal-best time of 47.90 seconds. Finally, fellow senior Dell Guy crossed the finish line in third-place on Friday night. Love's time is currently the No. 7 time in the NCAA and the fastest time recorded in the Mountain West this winter. Henry's personal-best time is currently No. 14 in the nation.
The Flyin' Frog women were also victorious in the 400 meters, taking home first and second-place honors in Albuquerque. Kristal Juarez won the event-title with a seasonal-best time, while freshman Quinterra Charles collected runner-up accolades in the event.
Stormy Harrison and Kelsey Samuels crushed the women's shot put field on Friday. Harrison won with a throw of 49 feet, 1 ½ inches on her third attempt, while Samuels followed in second-place with a personal-best toss of 49 feet, ¼ inches.
For a fourth-consecutive meet, freshman Cameron Tabor captured first-place accolades on the men's side, winning the men's shot put with a seasonal-best throw of 55 feet, 8 ¼ inches.
In the women's long jump, senior Neidra Covington captured the event title on Friday night with a seasonal-best leap of 19 feet, 11 inches. Covington, who just missed an NCAA provisional qualifying mark, currently ranks No. 2 in the conference and No. 27 in the NCAA in 2010. Sophomore Whitney Gipson followed in second-place out of 13 competitors.
Covington came back later in the night to place first overall in the women's triple jump with a jump of 40 feet, 10 ½ inches. Covington, who tied a seasonal-best mark, soared to the nation's 23rd-best ranked leap on Friday.
Other highlights on the night included, Festus Kigen who continued his domination on Friday night, winning the men's mile. Sean Zurko, a Las Vegas native, was also victorious for the Flyin' Frogs in the men's 800 meters, capturing first-place with a time of 1:51.18. Zurko just missed an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
The Flyin' Frogs closed the night in fine fashion as both the men's and women's 4x400 units placed first overall.
Overall, TCU won 15 of the 28 events in Albuquerque on Friday night.
"We are looking forward to coming home and getting some work in after three-straight weeks of competition," said Anderson.
TCU will have a week off before traveling to the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 12-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
