
Frogs Top Alumni in Annual Match-Up

FORT WORTH, Texas - The 2009 addition of TCU volleyball delighted fans with a 2-0 victory over the alumni squad Saturday night at the University Rec Center. The varsity squad battled to a 25-18 victory before storming away with a 25-10 win in the second set. Kourtney Edwards paced the team with six kills and three blocks.
"I was very satisfied with the way we played tonight," remarked head coach Prentice Lewis. "It was great to have the alumni back. Two weeks isn't a lot of time to prepare, but we are excited and ready to go next week."
In the first set, the alumni were able to stay close and even took a 13-11 lead on a solo block by Anna Vaughn Martin. But a trio of kills from Christy Hudson, Megan Munce and Sloane Sunstrum turned the deficit into a 14-13 varsity lead.
With the set tied at 17, a service error put the Frogs on top to stay. Kristen Hester slammed down her second kill of the set to push the lead to two then teamed with Hudson to push the margin to three, 20-18. With Irene Hester behind the service line, the Frogs closed out the 25-18 win on a service ace.
In the second set, the Frogs stormed out to a commanding 5-1 lead on a kill and two blocks from Edwards. With Hudson serving, the lead grew to 11-4. Kristen Hester teamed with Hannah Fort for two blocks and Irene Hester contributed a kill along with an ace from Hudson.
Two aces from Irene Hester bookended a 4-0 run by the Frogs as the lead grew to 16-5. Another denial on the outside by Edwards and Hudson pushed the lead to 20-8. An ace from Meghan Horio gave the Frogs match point and a miscommunication from the alumni sealed the 25-10 win.
Hudson had a strong game for the Frogs with five kills and five blocks. Sloane Sunstrum pitched in with two kills, while Kristen Hester and Irene Hester each finished with three kills apiece. Megan Munce tallied 15 assists in the win.
Blackwood paced the team defensively with eight digs, followed closely by seven from Irene Hester. Sunstrum pitched in with four digs as did Munce.
On the alumni side, Anna Vaughn Martin led all hitters with four kills. Hayley Harmon tallied two digs as did LeMeita Smith, Devon Kirk and Jenn Cuca Vegors. Kirk finished the night with three blocks. Nirelle Hampton pitched in with 11 assists.
Defensively, the Alumni were paced by eight digs from Vegors. Hampton tallied seven, followed closely by five from Julie Van't Wout Stewart. Cally Corley finished the night with three and Skye Tacker four.
Following the alumni match, the Frogs treated their fans to an intrasquad scrimmage.
The Frogs season gets under way Friday, August 28 against Arkansas. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. at the University Rec Center.
