FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU women's tennis assistant coach Colin Foster earned the Charlie McCleary-Waco Open singles title Sunday at the Waco Regional Tennis and Fitness Center.
"It's always fun to get out and compete," Foster said. "I enjoy working with the team and competing as a coach all season long, but to get out and play myself is always a lot of fun. I think it helps me improve as a coach when I can experience what they are experiencing when they are battling on the courts."
Foster secured the title after posting a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4) decision over Filip Kanczula. Foster entered the 64-man tournament as the eighth seed overall, picking up five wins over the weekend to claim biggest post-graduate victory.
"I played pretty well throughout the tournament," Foster said. "He was a good player. He had a three-hour match in the morning, so that might have given me an advantage. I did a good job of being focused. I had a 4-1 lead in the third set, and after letting it slip away, I regouped and pull it out in the tiebreaker."
The Western Springs, Ill., product had to surpass a pair of higher-seeded players to reach the finals, knocking off second-seed Tim Shuler and sixth-seed Theron Cole.
"They were both good players," Foster added. "I was able to find their weakness and keep going after them until I broke them down. It was good to get some momentum going heading into the final rounds."
Foster picked up his second consecutive ITA Southwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year award this season, helping guide the Frogs' to their second MWC tournament title in four years. Foster came to the Metroplex in the fall of 2006. Since his arrival, the Frogs have reached the NCAA Tournament three times and have been ranked among the nation's top-20 each of the last three seasons.
