COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Sophomores Christopher Price and Katariina Tuohimaa of the TCU men's and women's tennis teams were named Mountain West Conference Players of the Week Wednesday after leading their squads to unbeaten road trips last weekend.
Tuohimaa shared the women's honor with New Mexico's Ola Abou-Zekry. The award was the first of her career and the fifth this season for a member of the Frog women's team. Price, who also received his first career conference nod, totaled the fourth award this season earned by the TCU men.
A native of Houston, Texas, Price went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles play last weekend as No. 45 TCU won at least a share of its second straight MWC regular season title by defeating No. 41 New Mexico (5-2), No. 38 San Diego State (4-2) and Air Force (5-0) in San Diego.
Price was victorious at No. 5 singles over New Mexico's Phil Anderson (6-4, 7-5), San Diego State's Andre Feliz (6-4, 6-4) and Air Force's Alex Beaussart (6-0, 6-2). His win over Beaussart clinched both the match against the Falcons and the Horned Frogs' second straight MWC regular-season title. In No. 3 doubles action, Price teamed with Zach Nichols to beat New Mexico's Ben Dunbar and Carl Ho (9-7) in his only such match of the week.
Price finished conference action with a 5-1 singles record, which tied senior teammate Kriegler Brink for the team's top mark this season.
Tuohimaa, a native from Helsinki, Finland, won three singles matches and three doubles matches last week as the 27th-ranked Frog women's team defeated Air Force (5-2), Wyoming (7-0) and Colorado State (7-0) in conference play.
At No. 1 singles, Tuohimaa notched straight-set victories over Air Force's Christen Monreal (7-5, 6-4), Wyoming's Sarah Summerfield (6-4, 6-2) and Colorado State's Laura Neal (6-1, 7-6 [3]). At No. 2 doubles, Tuohimaa and Idunn Hertzberg defeated Air Force's Monreal and Allie Chermel (8-4). Touhimaa then teamed with Kayla Duncan at the No. 1 doubles position to beat Wyoming's Summerfield and Carly Van Hollen (8-3). She also paired up with Anna Sydorska to defeat Colorado State's Neal and Lauren Strasburger (8-4) in doubles play.
Tuohimaa owns a 13-8 overall singles record this season, including a 6-1 mark in MWC play. She is 11-9 in doubles and 5-2 in league matches.
The TCU women close out their regular season Friday, when they play host to No. 5 Baylor at Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. Both the women and men will then return to action April 22-25 at the MWC Tennis Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
