COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—TCU sophomore guard Helena Sverrisdottir was named Mountain West Conference Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Sverrisdottir shared the weekly honor with San Diego State junior guard Jene Morris.
The award is the third such honor of the season for Sverrisdottir, as well as the fifth of her career.
Sverrisdottir helped TCU knock off regular-season league co-champion Utah, 53-47, for the first time since 2006-07 last Sunday. The victory improved the Lady Frogs' record to 20-9 overall, marking their eighth 20-win season in nine years.
A native of Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, Sverrisdottir recorded her eighth double-double of the season with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds against the Utes. It marked the seventh time she scored at least 20 points in a game. She was 3-for-6 from 3-point range and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe, while adding four steals. The three treys matched a career high.
Sverrisdottir is in the midst of one of the top individual seasons for any MWC player. She is the lone individual to appear among the league's top-7 players for each of the four major statistical categories: scoring (No. 3—16.0 ppg), assists (No. 2—4.7apg), rebounding (7.2—No. 7) and steals (1.69—No. 7).
TCU has had three different players win or share five conference weekly honors this season. Junior guard TK LaFleur was tabbed on Nov. 17, while sophomore guard Emily Carter earned the Jan. 12 award. Sverrisdottir earned her other two honors on Dec. 8 and Feb. 9.
TCU begins play at the 2009 Conoco Mountain West Conference Championships as the No. 3 seed on Wednesday, when it faces the winner of Tuesday's matchup featuring the Nos. 6 and 7 seeds. Wednesday's tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. CT, with The Mountain West Sports Network (The Mtn.) televising the game.
