FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 6 Baylor Bears snapped No. 11 TCU's six-game winning streak, handing the Horned Frogs a 2-1 loss at Lupton Stadium. The Frogs were led at the plate by Matt Vern who tallied two hits on the night. The attendance of 3,029 was the fifth-largest crowd in Lupton Stadium history.Baylor tallied a two-out run to take the early the 1-0 lead in the ballgame. Brooks Pinckard led off the game with a bunt single. The Bears played small ball to get the run home. Pinckard stole second and moved to third on a long fly ball off the bat of Dustin Dickerson. Adam Hornung tripled to drive in the run.
The Frogs looked like they would tie the game in the bottom of the inning as Baylor starter Aaron Miller struggled to find the strike zone, walking three straight batters with one out. Miller settled in and retired the next two batters to leave the bases loaded.
Another two out run in the second extended the Bears lead to 2-0. Shaver Hansen drew the lead-off walk and made it to third with two outs. The Frogs looked like they would get out of the inning unscathed but a throwing error allowed the run to cross the plate.
TCU starter Steven Maxwell (1-1) settled into a groove. After giving up a lead-off double in the second, he retired the next seven batters he faced before issuing a walk to Ben Booker. Trent Appleby came on in relief and got Pinckard to fly out before picking off Booker to end the inning.
Offensively, the Frogs had chances, but couldn't get the timely hit. With two outs in the third, the Frogs got a double from Chris Ellington, then a walk to Matt Curry, but left both runners on. A lead-off single in the seventh also went by the wayside.
TCU finally picked up a run in the eighth inning. Matt Carpenter doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a ground out by Matt Curry with two outs. A balk called on Logan Verrett allowed Carpenter to score to cut the Bears lead in half.
The Frogs attempted a rally in the bottom of the ninth as Taylor Featherston was hit by the pitch to lead off the inning. Pinch runner Brance Rivera moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Matt Vern, but the Frogs couldn't come up with the hit.
Maxwell took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. He walked two and struck out three. Trent Appleby surrendered two hits in 2 2/3 innings of work with two strikeouts. Kaleb Merck and Erik Miller tossed the final two innings for TCU.
The Frogs (6-2) remain home as they host Wichita State for a three-game series starting Friday night. First pitch for the series-opener is slated for 6:30 p.m.
