DALLAS--TCU men's tennis assistant coach Jason Marshall advanced to the second round of the main doubles draw Monday at the Men's Challenger of Dallas, a USTA Pro Circuit event held this week at Dallas' T Bar M Racquet Club.
Marshall and American teammate Patrick Briaud posted a 5-7, 7-6(1), 10-5 victory over Takao Suzuki (Japan) and Marcio Torres (Brazil) Monday evening in first-round action. The tandem will next face the winner of Wednesday's match between Santiago Gonzalez (Mexico)/Giovanni Lapentti (Ecuador) and Todd Widom (USA) and Michael Yani (USA). Widom and Yani, the draw's No. 2 seed, own a combined ATP ranking of No. 366.
Marshall and Briaud qualified for the Challenger as a wild card after winning the Oracle Challenger of Dallas Wild Card Doubles Tournament back in December. Both players originally hail from Texas, and the two had never played as a tandem prior to the wild card tourney. While Marshall played collegiately at Purdue, Briaud was a 2005 graduate of Cal.
Monday's match marked only the second time in Challenger of Dallas history that a wildcard won a main-draw match. Marshall was involved in that one, too, with teammate Byron Talbot in 2004.
