COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The TCU women earned runner-up honors at the 2009 Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday at the Cadet Field House, while the Flyin' Frog men closed competition in fifth-place.For the weekend, TCU won eight event titles, set one school record, garnered the Women's Outstanding Performance Award and recorded nine NCAA provisional marks in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The following are quotes from head coach Darryl Anderson and key performers over the weekend.
Darryl Anderson
"Our women ended up second and I was very pleased with that. We won five individual titles with the women and three with the men, which is good. Overall, we had our best meet of the year. A lot of people stepped up this weekend and had personal-bests. On the men's side, we knew coming in that it was going to be tough because we left six All-Americans at home, but that's never an excuse. We had a lot of personal-bests on the men's side and did a good job."
"Jessica Young set a new school record in the women's 60 and almost set the school record in the 400, so she had a good day on the track. It was nice for her to get the Women's Outstanding Performance Award at the end of the meet, she deserves it."
"We are really excited for Candis Kelley. She won the women's shot for the fourth year in a row, which is great. Stormy Harrison was also phenomenal today, especially considering that she had only been practicing for a few weeks. She kind of snuck into the finals and made the most of it. The women's shot was just fun to watch with both Candis and Stormy doing a phenomenal job today."
"Meaghan Peoples was another one that came in here and did a good job this week for us in the pentathlon."
"We swept the 60 on the men's side without Justyn Warner and Otis McDaniel this weekend, so it boads well with the direction that we are going. I thought what we did was good."
"We just need to get our team ready for the outdoor season now and let the individuals that will compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships do their thing. Really, our men's team is going to be a completely different animal come outdoors, while our women's team is going to continue to get better, so the future looks bright for us."
Andon Mitchell
"I am very happy that I was able to retain my title in the 60 meters. We all did a great job today and it's all about team effort."
Jessica Young
"It means a lot to come in here and win both events today. I knew coming in that I wasn't a familiar person in the Mountain West Conference, so I had to work hard regardless.
"I am excited and reached my goal of winning both the 60 and 400. I am pleased with what I ran in the 400, but I am still trying to get back to what I ran last year in the 60 meters."
Jessica Clarke
"This means a lot to come out here and win because I started off the season real slow. Coach Anderson switched me to speed work a couple of weeks ago and I am very thankful for that because it helped me today a lot."
Jordan Pitts
"It means a lot to come out here and win my second-straight title in the hurdles. I have had a really rough indoor season and wasn't to sure coming into today, but Coach Anderson was confident in me and that's all that matters. We were missing a lot of guys today, so I was just trying to get the 10 points to help the team out as much as I can."
Candis Kelley
"It felt good today, but I had some tough competition in Stormy. Overall, I am just glad that my teammate and I were able to come out first and second."
"I am gunning for Stormy during the outdoor season, since I got a silver medal during last year's championships."
Stormy Harrison
"We were back and fourth today and I am glad that Candis won, she deserved it. Really, I am just glad that I got the mark that I did since I have been out for so long."
"Candis better be ready during the outdoor season because I opened with 50 and it is only going to get better from here on out."
Kishelle Paul
"I am excited that we won the women's 4x400 today, but disappointed that we ran a slower time then what we came out to accomplish."
