H2O Frogs Snare Four Wins in California

SAN DIEGO - The TCU swimming and diving programs impressed Friday, as the men defeated UC San Diego, 157.5-123.5, while the women fell to San Diego State and toppled UCSD, University of San Diego and Idaho.
TCU's men's squad dominated the Tritons, garnering victories in 14 of the 16 events. Senior Josh Bagby and junior Edgar Peyro lead the squad with two individual wins each, while also supporting both of the Frogs' relay victories. Bagby, a Houston, Texas native, throttled the field in the 50- (21.21) and 100-free (46.45), while Peyro swept the 100- (50.55) and 200-fly (1:52.85).
Sophomore Edgar Crespo didn't get left out, claiming three wins Friday. After taking the 100- (56.20) and 200-breast (2:05.83), the Panama City, Panama product nailed down his first 200-IM medal of the year at 1:55.18. After three meets, Crespo has won all 12 events he has competed, including seven relays.
Junior diver Kyle Callens also earned his due recognition, sweeping the springboard events. Coming off his Mountain West Conference Male Diver of the Week performance against Air Force, Callens bested both of his season-opening scores Friday with a score of 323.05 on the one-meter, followed by a 305.80 mark from the three-meter dive.
Junior Jeff Gettel continues to impress in the backstroke events, claiming the 100- (51.41) and 200-back (1:50.50). Sophomore Laszlo Gyurko picked up his second-straight 200-free title, clocking in at 1:42.55.
TCU's relay squads served as perfect bookends to the afternoon, as the team of Gyurko, Crespo, Peyro and Bagby torched through the 200-medley relay (1:32.61) in the men's opening event, while Gyurko, freshman Devin Price, Peyro and Bagby rounded out the evening with a 3:05.91 timing in the 400-free relay.
On the women's side, senior diver Jennifer Ferguson continues to own the sky, sweeping both springboard events. The Beaconsfield, Quebec, native won the one-meter at 243.75, while taking the three-meter board with a score of 284.15. Junior Destiny Glampe followed closely, earning runner-up honors in both events, earning a scorecard of 210.65 in the one-meter and 222.40 from the higher dive.
Senior Stephanie Futscher maintained her dominance in the 200-fly, leading the way with a time of 2:05.88. After setting the TCU record for the 200-fly at the 2009 MWC Championships, the Irving, Texas product has gotten off to a 3-0 in the event to start the season.
Sophomore Ashley Bolin garnered a pair of runner-up finishes, tapping the wall in the 200-free at 1:53.14, followed by a 200-IM clocking of 2:09.94. Sophomore Zrinka Korac was also tabbed for second-place recognition in the 100-free (52.65).
Other strong performances came from junior Maria Paula Alvarez, sophomore Jennifer Oster and freshman Parris Schoppa. Alvarez garnered a third-place finish in the 500-free (5:05.19), while Oster took bronze honors in the 100-fly (58.23). Schoppa, an Oklahoma City product, took home third-place accolades in the 50-free for her time of 24.63.
TCU ended the night with the winning 400-free relay squad of Korac, freshman Kristi Dena, sophomore Kaitlyn Vann and Alvarez crashing in with a time of 3:32.71.
The Frogs will enjoy a 15-day layoff before hosting MWC foe Wyoming at the University Rec Center on Nov. 21.
