LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The UNLV Rebels snapped TCU's eight-match win streak, handing the Horned Frogs a 3-0 (18-25, 22-25, 24-26) loss in Las Vegas Saturday afternoon. Christy Hudson led the Frog attack with 14 kills and Irene Hester notched her fifth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 12 digs.TCU's offense sputtered in the loss as they committed 21 attacking errors and hit just .167 in the match, while the Rebels hit .252 with 42 kills. Kourtney Edwards finished with three kills and a team-high five blocks. Katelyn Blackwood tallied a match-high 15 digs.
With the first set tied a four apiece, the Rebels took a 5-4 lead and never looked back as they went on to take a 25-18 victory in the opening set. Irene Hester helped the Frogs keep the set close as she fired off six kills alone in the set.
Trailing 20-11, the Frogs tried to rally as they put together a 7-3 run to creep back within six, 23-17. Hudson fired off two kills in the rally, while Irene Hester, Lauren Otto and Megan Munce each pitched in with a kill. The Rebels held off the Frog attack to get the early 1-0 match lead.
In the second set, a Kristen Hester kill broke a 5-5 tie and spurred a 3-0 run that put the Frogs in front. Back-to-back kills from Hudson helped the Frog lead grow and Edwards, Hudson and Otto teamed on a triple block to make it a 13-7 lead, forcing a UNLV timeout.
The break proved beneficial to the Rebels as they went on an 11-3 run that gave the Rebels an 18-16 lead. Two straight kills from Hudson helped the Frogs tie the set at 20 and the battle was on from there. TCU took a 21-20 lead on a solo block in the middle by Kristen Hester, only to see the Rebels answer with a 5-1 run that gave them the 25-22 victory and the 2-0 match lead.
In the third set, the Frogs tried to gain some momentum, taking a 7-6 lead on a block by Irene Hester and Kristen Hester. A back-and-forth set ensued as the teams battled to a 13-all tie. Kills from Kristen Hester and Hudson helped keep the Frogs close.
A Frog service error put UNLV back on top and spurred a 6-0 run by the Rebels that put them in control, 19-13. Hudson tried to rally the Frogs as she pitched in with two kills to get the Frogs back within three, 23-20, forcing a UNLV timeout.
Erin Greenwood gave the Rebels match point with a kill, but a blast from Hudson and a Rebel miscue tied the set at 24. UNLV rallied with two straight points to lock up the 26-24 set three victory.
With the loss, the Frogs fall to 23-6 on the season and 12-3 in league play. They will wrap up conference play on Nov. 20 against New Mexico. The Frogs will honor their four seniors in the 2009 home finale. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. at the University Rec Center.
