
TCU Wins Thriller; Tops San Diego State

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU volleyball team defeated San Diego State, 3-1 (25-20, 25-11, 20-25, 26-24), in a thrilling match Saturday afternoon. The Aztecs had three set points in the fourth set, but the Frogs rallied to come away with the four-set victory. Kourtney Edwards tallied a match-high 16 kills, while Irene Hester posted her third double-double of the season with 10 kills and 14 digs.On the afternoon, the Frogs hit an even .200 with 49 kills. They served up six aces, led by two each from Megan Munce and Kristen Hester. Katelyn Blackwood led the Frogs with 16 digs, while Meghan Horio pitched in with 10. Edwards paced the Frogs at the net with four blocks. Munce finished the afternoon with seven kills, 33 assists and eight digs.
The Horned Frogs overcame a dismal start in set one to take a 25-20 victory. San Diego State raced out to a 7-4 lead when Lauren Otto blasted a kill to get the Frogs rolling. TCU went on 9-3 run to take a 13-10 lead. Munce dropped in ace around two kills from Irene Hester and a solo block from Christy Hudson.
The lead continued to grow as the Frogs were firing on all cylinders. Kristen Hester dropped in another ace, while Hudson and Edwards tallied four kills to help the lead grow to seven, 20-13.
TCU had to withstand a furious rally by the Aztecs as they went on a 7-2 run to close within two, 22-20, but a kill from Munce followed by her second ace of the set gave the Frogs set point. Kristen Hester finished off the win with her second kill of the set.
An efficient Horned Frog team took the floor in the second set as they ran away with the 25-11 set two victory. As a team, they pounded out 12 kills and hit at a .385 clip. The Aztecs served up four service errors and had six hitting errors to help the Frog cause.
A kill from Munce gave TCU an early 7-3 advantage and the Frogs cruised from there. Leading 19-9, Otto rattled off five points on her serve to put the Frogs in full control. Irene Hester pitched in two kills along with a blast from Edwards. An Aztec service error ended the set.
San Diego State came out on fire in the third set and took the 25-20 victory to force a game four. With the set tied at eight, the Aztecs went on a 7-3 run to take a 15-11 lead and they cruised from three.
The most thrilling set of the match was the final set that saw seven ties and five lead changes. San Diego State pushed hard trying to send the match to a fifth set, but the Frogs had an answer.
The Aztecs took what appeared to be a commanding lead at 22-19, but Hudson stepped behind the service line and pulled the Frogs within one, 22-21, as the Frogs took advantage of two Aztec miscues and Hudson dropped in an ace. Two straight kills by the Aztecs gave them set point at 24-21.
Edwards turned the momentum as she blasted a kill to the back court and Otto stepped behind the service line. An attack error made it 24-23 and a block that traveled all the way across the net and landed just inside the boundary line by Edwards and Irene Hester tied the set at 24-all. Another attack error gave the Frogs match point and Edwards finished off the come-from-behind win with her fourth kill of the set, giving the Frogs the 26-24 win.
TCU improves to 15-4 overall and 4-1 in league play. The Frogs will hit the road for two matches in Utah next week. First up for the Frogs is Utah on Thursday. Match time is slated for 8 p.m. (CST).
