FORT WORTH, Texas - An outstanding service match by the TCU Horned Frogs helped them remain perfect on the young season as they defeated Texas Southern 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-13). The 4-0 start matches the best start in school history, a feat that has been accomplished twice (2002 and 2006). Freshman Megan Munce led the Frogs with nine kills, four aces and three digs. The Horned Frogs jumped out to a big lead in game one, setting the tone for the match. Christy Hudson proved tough with her serve as she served the Frogs to a 7-3 lead, helped along by kills from Lauren Otto and Kourtney Edwards.
TCU withstood a mini-rally from the Lady Tigers, but an Irene Hester ace got the Frogs rolling again with a 13-7 lead. Hudson took over the service line with the score at 17-10 and pushed the Lead out to 20-11 with help from a loud block in the middle by Otto and Edwards. A Hester/Devon Kirk block on the outside sealed the 25-13 game one victory.
An entirely new line-up hit the court for game two. The Frogs and the Lady Tigers battled to a 6-all tie before turning the service line over to Megan Munce. She spurred a 6-0 run for the Frogs as she mixed three aces in around kills from Hannah Fort and Sarah Joeckel to make it a 13-7 game.
Jess Menden continued to lead the Frogs as she set up Fort, Kristen Hester and Kylie Pont for timely kills that helped the Frog lead grow. Joeckel sealed the game two victory with a cross court kill that gave TCU the 25-29 victory.
Serving again was a strength for the Frogs as they closed out the sweep with a 25-13 victory in game three. The Lady Tigers kept it close taking an 11-10 lead before the Frog hitters came alive. A Kristen Hester blast down the middle gave TCU a 13-12 lead and a Kristen Hester/Pont denial gave the Frogs breathing room.
With the Frogs leading 17-13, Victoria Hernandez took over the serving duties and closed out the match. She pitched in three aces, while Munce tallied three kills and Pont another. A solo block by Fort in the middle sealed the victory.
All 14 players got in the game for TCU. In just one game of work, Edwards tallied six kills on eight swings with one block. Menden recorded 23 assists. Fort and Joeckel each finished with seven kills, followed by Kristen Hester with six. Christy Hudson had three aces and Katelyn Blackwood tied for the team lead with six digs.
The Frogs (4-0) will hit the road for six straight matches this upcoming weekend. They will head to Edinburg, Texas for two matches on Saturday. TCU opens Saturday against Prairie View A&M at 1 p.m. and will finish with UT-Pan American at 4 p.m.
