
Frogs Win Streak Halted In 3-1 Loss to Oklahoma

LUBBOCK, Texas - After winning the first set, the TCU Horned Frogs struggled to solve the Oklahoma Sooners as they dropped their first match of the season. The Sooners won 3-1 (25-23, 15-25, 21-25, 17-25) ending the Frogs nine game winning streak.Lauren Otto paced the Frog attack with her fourth double-double of the season as she finished with 11 kills and 11 digs. Katelyn Blackwood paced the Frogs with 14 digs, while Kourtney Edwards racked up four blocks. Nirelle Hampton finished with seven kills, 34 assists, five digs and a block.
TCU took the early advantage in game one as they took a 7-5 lead on kills from Devon Kirk and Nirelle Hampton. The Sooners had some fight in them as they went on a 5-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. Lauren Otto stopped the rally with a kill off the block and an ace from Irene Hester pulled the Frogs within one.
Trailing 12-10, Kourtney Edwards got a kill off the block that spurred a 6-0 run and put the Frogs in front. A kill from Otto tied the game and an attack error by the Sooners put the Frogs in front. Otto followed with two kills and a solo block to give the Frogs a 16-12 lead. An ace from Katelyn Blackwood made it 19-14.
The Sooners battled, pulling within one, 22-21 with an 8-2 run, but a service error by Caitlin Higgins turned the tide in favor of the Frogs. Edwards gave the Frogs set point with a cross court kill and Hampton sealed the victory with a dump to the middle of the court for a 25-23 victory.
It was all Sooners in game two as they quickly ran away with the game. The dagger to any thoughts of a comeback came with an 8-0 run that gave the Sooners a commanding 18-5 lead. The Frogs put together an 8-2 run on kills from Otto and Hampton. Edwards pitched in with a pair of blocks and Otto served up an ace to get within seven, 20-13. Oklahoma held on to even the match at one game apiece with a 25-15 win.
A total reversal in game three saw the Frogs come out strong as they took an early 6-3 lead. Kills from Hampton, Hudson, Otto and Edwards helped spur the rally. The streaky Sooners found a rhythm as they rattled off four straight points to tie the game at nine.
The Frogs looked like they had weathered the storm as Kirk killed the rally with a loud kill off the block and then teamed with Hudson for a denial on the outside to help the Frogs regain the lead. It was short-lived as the Sooners again rallied with an 8-2 run to open up a 19-15 lead.
Back-to-back kills from Kirk pulled the Frogs back within two, 20-18, but it wasn't enough. Back and forth side outs sealed the 25-21 victory and gave Oklahoma the 2-1 match lead.
After a quick start to game four that saw the Frogs take a 5-3 lead, the Sooners went on their patented runs to regain the lead. Hampton pitched in a kill and an ace, while Hudson tallied two and Kirk one to help build the lead, but they couldn't solve the serving of Christy Disarro. She served the Sooners to a 10-6 lead.
The Frogs tried to keep it close, but another big run by the Sooners opened the game. They rattled off six straight points and nine of 10 to take a 21-11 lead and the closed out the 25-17 win.
The Frogs (9-1) will return home to open up conference play on Wednesday. The New Mexico Lobos will made their way to Fort Worth for a 7 p.m. tilt on Wednesday night at the University Rec Center.
