BEIJING, China - Former TCU baseball All-America Jake Arrieta helped key Team USA to a 9-1 victory over China in the Beijing Olympics Monday morning. The right-hander tossed six scoreless innings to earn his first win in Beijing. The win helped Team USA improve to 3-2 in round-robin play.
Arrieta allowed no runs on just two with seven strikeouts. He walked two and hit two. Team USA helped Arrieta's cause as they scored nine runs on nine hits. After allowing a lead-off single in the second inning, Arrieta didn't surrender another base hit the rest of his outing, a span of 18 batters. He needed just 96 pitches to get through six innings of work.
Arrieta was a fifth-round draft pick of Baltimore in the 2007 MLB Draft. He received a record signing bonus for a fifth round pick and made an immediate impact in the Arizona Fall League with 16 scoreless outings.
In 20 games for the Fredeick Keys this season, Arrieta was 6-5 with a 2.87 ERA. In 113 innings, he struck out 120 and walked 51. Opposing hitters batted just .199 against Arrieta.
