TCU doubled its win total from last season, posting a 20-7 overall record and capturing both the Mountain West Conference regular season and tournament titles. The Frogs are currently ranked No. 34 nationally after entering the season ranked No. 62.
Senior Cosmin Cotet was named the MWC Co-Player of the year after recording a 20-6 dual mark at the top singles position. Cotet, ranked No. 39 nationally, defeated 12 ranked opponents during the 2007-08 season, including two players in the top 10. Cotet, Emanu Brighiu and Kriegler Brink all earned all-conference singles selections, while Cotet and Brink also earned doubles recognition.
Rice enters Friday's contest with a 16-8 overall record and a No. 24 national ranking. The Owls won two contests in the Conference USA Championships before falling to No. 9 Tulsa in the title match. Bruno Rosa and Christoph Muller, ranked No. 14 and No. 62, respectively, lead Rice in singles play. The doubles duo of Muller and Ralph Knupfer is currently ranked No. 25.
TCU will look to snap a three-match skid against Rice dating back to the 2003 season. The Frogs hold a commanding 30-8 advantage in the overall series that dates back to 1974.
The Frogs will face the winner of the match between No. 7 Texas and No. 74 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi if they are able to advance past Friday's first-round contest. The winner of the Austin Regional will advance to the Sweet 16 held in Tulsa, Okla.
