COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Kriegler Brink was named the Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the final selection this season, the league office announced on Wednesday. The award was the second for Brink this season, and the conference-leading seventh selection for the men's tennis team.
Brink, a native of Gauteng, South Africa, went a combined 3-0 last weekend, including the clinching singles victory, to lead the Horned Frogs to the 2008 Mountain West Conference Tournament Championship.
In TCU's semifinal match against BYU, Brink teamed up with Emanu Brighiu to defeat the Cougar duo of Sanchez and Young to clinch the doubles point. In singles play, Brink posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Cassidy Mears at the No. 3 position to put the Frogs up 3-0 in the match.
Against New Mexico in the title match, the Frogs dropped the first three singles matches to fall down 3-1, and also lost first sets in two other contests before mounting a furious comeback. With the match knotted at 3-3, Brink outlasted Graeme Kassautzki by a score of 5-7, 7-5, 6-4, with the last game going to 14 points, to capture the championship.
Brink has had a record-setting year, putting together a 23-2 singles mark this spring and an overall singles record of 32-6 during the 2007-08 season. Brink's overall season singles winning percentage currently stands at .842, which ranks second all-time at TCU. Brink has put together a combined singles and doubles record during the 2007-08 season of 52-15 (.766), which ranks eighth all-time in school history. Brink earned all-conference honors in singles and doubles this season, and is currently ranked No. 50 in doubles play with partner Cosmin Cotet.
The Frogs earned a No. 3 seed in the Austin Regional for the NCAA Championships on Tuesday, and will meet No. 24 Rice in the opening round on May 9 at 1 p.m. The individual selections for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships will be announced later Wednesday.
