SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The TCU Horned Frogs saw their nine-game conference winning streak come to an end at the hands of San Diego State ace, Stephen Strasburg. The sophomore dominated in the 4-1 victory as he held the Frogs offense in check. Tyler Lockwood did his part in trying to keep the Frogs in the contest as he finished with seven strikeouts in eight innings of work. Ben Carruthers had the lone hit for the Frogs.A lead-off double in the bottom of the third inning translated into a 1-0 lead for San Diego State. Erik Castro led off the inning with a double and scored on a bloop single off the bat of Cameron Johnson. The Frogs found themselves in more trouble as Johnson stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch with only one out. TCU starter Tyler Lockwood got a big strike out for the second out then got the Aztecs leading hitter, Troy Hanzawa, to fly out to end the inning with just the one run scored.
The Horned Frogs were kept off balance by Aztec starter Steven Strasburg who kept it a 1-0 game retiring the first 18 batters to open the game.
Meanwhile, San Diego State added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth, picking up a run on two hits. Castro singled with one out and moved to second on a ground ball. Pat Colwell came through with a two-out base hit to send home Castro to make it a 2-0 contest.
Carruthers finally broke up Strasburg's rhythm as he led off the seventh inning with a double to the gap in left center. With Bryan Kervin at the plate, Strasburg unleashed a wild pitch that allowed Carruthers to move to third. Kervin delivered, hitting the ball to the right side and scoring the run to cut the lead in half.
Strasburg continued his dominance into the eighth and the Aztecs carried that momentum into the bottom of the frame, breaking the game open with two two-out runs. Colwell led off with a single and moved to second on a ground out. After Lockwood picked up the second out, he issued an intentional walk to Nick Romero. Garrett Green tripled to drive in the two insurance runs.
Lockwood (4-1) tossed his third complete game of the season in the loss. He allowed four runs on 10 hits. He allowed just the one intentional walk and struck out seven. Carruthers finished with the lone hit in the ballgame.
Strasburg (6-1) finished with his second complete game of the season. He allowed just one run on one hit. He walked one and struck out 13.
The Frogs fall to 27-15 on the season and 11-5 in conference play. They will try and even the series at a game apiece on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. (CST). Sean Hoelscher will get the start for the Frogs.
