WACO, Texas- In just its second year of competition, the TCU equestrian team has reached the championship game of the Varsity Equestrian Western National Championship.
After defeating Kansas State 5-3, the Frogs will face the Georgia Bulldogs in the championship game. Earlier this season, the Frogs won the Western tiebreaker with the Bulldogs after tying in total points 5-5. In that game senior Jessica Bailey, a former Bulldog, earned MVP honors in Horsemanship.
In the game against the Wildcats, TCU was down to its final rider needing a win to advance, since the Frogs would have lost the tiebreaker. Junior Carrie von Uhlit put the fans' worries to rest by scoring a 148.5, defeating her opponent by three points.
"I'm very excited, and I feel very blessed to be on this team," freshman Ashton Mickunas said after the win. Mickunas was one of two Frogs to earn a point in the Reining to record her first post season victory.
In Horsemanship, Chloe Baker and Kindel Huffman each extended their individual winning streaks. Baker has now reached eight in a row, while Huffman extended hers to 14 consecutive matches dating back to last season. Huffman will compete Saturday morning for the individual championship in Horsemanship.
The final round will begin at 2:00 p.m. All action can be followed on gofrogs.com.
