WICHITA, Kan. - The TCU Horned Frogs couldn't get their bats going on a cold day at Eck Stadium as they were swept by No. 15 Wichita State Sunday afternoon. The Shockers took the game by a 5-1 score, helped along by three two-out runs. Steve Ellington led the Frog offense with two hits, while Andrew Cashner retired all four batters he faced to lead the pitching staff.
The Shockers staked themselves to another early lead as they picked up a first inning run. Ryan Jones singled on the first pitch he saw and third baseman Conor Gillaspie laced a double to deep left center to send Jones home all the way from first. Gillaspie wasted no time stealing third, but TCU starter Sean Hoelscher got a bit strikeout of Dusty Coleman and froze Bret Bascue to end the inning without any further damage.
Wichita State added to its lead in the second inning, tacking on a two-out run. Tyler Weber singled with one out and Kenny Williams, Jr. worked a four-pitch walk to put two on with one out. Hoelscher helped himself out, picking off Weber at second base for the second out, but Williams, Jr. took off for second and scored easily on a two-out single from Andy Dirks.
The Frogs cut the lead in half in the top of the third inning, picking up a run on two hits. Matt Vern singled to lead off the inning and along with Corey Steglich, the duo executed a perfect hit-and-run to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Bryan Kervin got the Frogs on the board hitting a long sacrifice fly to center field.
Another one-out base hit led to a Shocker run as they stormed right back to regain the two-run lead. Josh Workman doubled down the right field line and scored on a Bret Bascue single to give Wichita State a 3-1 lead.
Following the early offensive innings, the pitchers for both teams settled into a rhythm. Eric Marshall took over for Hoelscher in the fourth and faced the minimum through three innings of work, helped along by two double plays turned by his defense. Shocker starter Anthony Capra retired the final eight batters he faced before being lifted in the seventh.
Wichita State broke the game open with a two-run seventh inning. Both runs scored after the Frogs had recorded two outs in the inning. Cashner came on and got the final out of the inning to keep it a four-run game.
Hoelscher (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season. The freshman tossed three innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out three. Marshall allowed two runs in 3 2/3 innings. He surrendered just two hits, walked four and struck out three.
With the sweep the Frogs fall to 9-8 on the season. TCU will open up a four game home stand on Tuesday night when it hosts McNeese State. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Lupton Stadium.
