WICHITA, Kan - The No. 15 Wichita State Shockers halted the TCU Horned Frogs four-game winning streak, handing them a 5-1 loss Friday night at Eck Stadium. Two TCU errors proved costly as the Shockers scored three unearned runs in the first two innings. Clint Arnold led the Frogs offensively with two hits in the game.A two-out error in the bottom of the first inning loomed large as the Shockers took advantage of the extra out provided by the Frogs. Conor Gillaspie reached on a fielding error by Bryan Kervin and stole second. Dusty Coleman walked and Tyler Weber picked up an infield single to give Wichita State the 1-0 lead. Josh Workman followed with a single up the middle to drive home Coleman to make it a 2-0 game.
Again, an error proved costly for the Frogs in the second inning, costing them two more runs. Kenny Williams, Jr. was safe on an error by TCU starter Seth Garrison to open the inning and Andy Dirks dropped down a bunt single to put two on with no outs. Gillaspie drove a one-out double to left field that cleared the bases and gave the Shockers a 4-0 lead.
Wichita State added to its lead with a two-out run. Ryan Jones singled, breaking up a string of seven straight retired by Garrison. Gillaspie followed with a double to right center make it a 5-0 contest.
The Frogs had a chance to climb back in the contest as they loaded the bases with only one out in the top of the fifth. Hunt Woodruff and Steve Ellington came through with one-out singles to center and Aaron Schultz singled through the left side to load the bases. Shocker starter Rob Musgrave got Ben Carruthers to pop out to the first baseman for the second out in the inning. Kervin came through with an infield single to third base to drive in Woodruff, but Ellington was tagged out as he rounded third base a little too far, ending the inning.
Another promising inning in the sixth went by the wayside as two runners were erased on the base paths. Arnold and Bryan Holaday singled to lead off the inning, but a strike `em out/throw `em out double play got the Shockers within one out of ending the inning. Holaday strayed too far off second and was picked off to end the threat.
After the rocky start, Garrison (0-3) settled into a groove as he worked through the sixth inning, allowing just three hits after the second. Following Gillaspie's fourth-inning double, Garrison set down seven of the final eight batters he faced. The sixth innings were the most for the junior this season as he allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits. He walked two and struck out one in the loss.
Chris Anagnostou tossed the final two innings for the Frogs. He held the Shockers scoreless, allowing just two hits and one walk, while striking out three.
The Frogs fall to 9-6 on the season. They will try and knot the series at a game apiece on Saturday afternoon. Greg Holle will get his fourth start of the season as the Frogs and the Shockers take to the diamond at 2 p.m.
