Fort Worth, Texas - The TCU Sports Review covers all the action of the past week and takes a look forward to future Horned Frog competition.
Men's Basketball
Last Week: The TCU men's basketball team beat Colorado State, 66-64, in a nail-biting victory at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on Wednesday night. Senior Brent Hackett (Fort Worth, Texas/Southwest H.S.) was the high-scorer for the Horned Frogs as he put up 19 points and went 11-for-11 from the free-throw line.
The home win improved the Frogs' record to 13-12 overall and 5-7 in Mountain West Conference action.
This Week:
TCU will return to the court Wednesday night after a week off where it faces Utah at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. Central Time.
The Frogs will also play UNLV in Las Vegas on March 1st. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. Central Time.
Women's Basketball
Last Week: The TCU women's basketball squad blew out the Rams of Colorado State, 76-41, in Fort Collins, Colo., on Wednesday night. Senior Adrianne Ross (Hobbs, N.M./Hobbs H.S.) led all scorers with 16 points and fellow senior Lorie Butler-Rayford (Inglewood, Calif./Morningside H.S.) grabbed 12 boards while adding nine points.
The win was the Lady Frogs' fifth straight road victory as it improved their record to 17-9 overall and 10-2 in Mountain West Conference play.
This Week:
The Lady Frogs hit the road to face the MWC-leading Utah on Wednesday night as they look for their sixth straight road victory. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. Central Time.
TCU will return home to play UNLV on March 1st. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. Central Time at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
Baseball
Last Week: The TCU baseball team opened its 2008 campaign against 14th-ranked Cal-State Fullerton on Friday. The Horned Frogs lost the home-opener, 11-5, despite the efforts of junior Ben Carruthers (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown H.S.) who went 3-for-5 from the plate and had one RBI.
The Frogs evened the series on Saturday afternoon as they beat the Titans, 4-2. Sophomore Steven Maxwell (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands H.S.) threw seven solid innings allowing only two runs on four hits. With a scoreless inning of pitching, junior Andrew Cashner (Montgomery, Texas/Conroe H.S.) earned his first career save.
The Frogs dropped the final game of the series against Cal State Fullerton with a score of 7-4. Junior Matt Vern (Lake Jackson, Texas/Brazoswood H.S.) had three RBI's in the contest while sophomore Tyler Lockwood (Sugar Land, Texas/Kempner H.S.) threw two scoreless innings for the Frogs.
This Week:
The Frogs face Dallas Baptist on Tuesday night at Lupton Stadium. The first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
Men's Tennis
Last Week: The 46th-ranked TCU men's tennis team beat 66th-ranked Minnesota on Saturday by a score of 7-0. TCU swept the Golden Gophers in doubles' matches while freshman Casey Powers (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park H.S.) helped put the Frogs up 5-0 with a 7-5, 6-4 win in singles at the No. 6 position.
Junior Kriegler Brink (Gauteng, South Africa) improved his singles' record to 9-0 as he beat Minnesota's Mark Kepler 7-5, 6-1.
The Frogs suffered their first loss of the season to 15th-ranked Oklahoma State, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon. Senior Cosmin Cotet (Iasi, Romania/University of Iasi) defeated No. 10th-ranked Oleksandr Nedovyesov at the singles' position with a score 4-6, 6-2, 7-6.
This Week:
The Frogs return to the courts on March 5th where they host Oklahoma. Action begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
Women's Tennis
Last Week: The No. 33rd-ranked TCU women's tennis team fell to No. 8th-ranked Baylor on Wednesday night 6-1. Junior Anna Sydorska (Lviv, Ukraine) defeated No. 22nd-ranked Taylor Ormond in singles' play with scores of 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. In doubles, 11th-ranked duo of Macall Harkins (Palos Verdes, Calif./Illinois) and Sydorska improved to 3-0 on the season with an 8-2 win at the No. 1 position.
TCU also knocked off No. 16th-ranked William & Mary on Sunday by a score of, 4-3, as Sydorska won her fourth consecutive singles' match by winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. KatariinaTuohimaa (Helsinki, Finland) also won her singles' match by a score of 7-6, 6-2.
This Week:
The Frogs return to the courts on Wednesday where they will host SMU at 6:00 p.m.
Equestrian
Last Week: The TCU women's equestrian team got revenge against Fresno State this past weekend after defeating the Bulldogs, 10-5, in a game lasting nearly eight hours. The Horned Frogs lost to Fresno State last week in the championship of Best of the West tournament.
Senior Kindel Huffman (Norco, Calif./Norco H.S.) earned Most Valuable Player honors in the Equitation over Fences event with a score of 78. That win made Huffman the first Frog to an MVP in all four events in the same season. Making her first appearance since October, senior Jessica Bailey (Batavia, Ohio/Archbishop McNicholas H.S.) also earned MVP honors in the Horsemanship with a score of 74.
With the win, the Lady Frogs improved their record to 4-7 overall.
The Frogs will be out action until March 8th when they compete against Baylor in Mansfield, Texas.
