
TCU honors athletes of the month and scholar-athletes

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Men's track and field student-athlete Jonathan Jackson and women's swimmer Maria Alvarez are TCU's Male and Female Athletes of the Month. TCU's Scholar Athletes of the Month are Tommy Killen of men's track and field and Simone Riford of women's rifle.Jackson earned first-place honors in the triple jump at the Rod McCravy Invitational leaping 15.39m (50-06.00), just missing an NCAA provisional mark. This was his second-consecutive triple jump title of the indoor season. The senior from Grand Prairie, Texas, earned an NCAA provisional mark by posting a career-best leap of 15.77m (51-09.00).
Alvarez joined the Frogs for the start of the spring season and has posted six wins in her first five collegiate meets. Her six wins tie for the most wins on the women's squad. The freshman from Cali, Colombia, has the top times on the team in the 200-free at 1:55.00 and 500-free at 5:06.01. Alvarez has won four events in the last two meets against Centenary and New Mexico.
Killen, a 2006 qualifier in the discus, threw 56.17m (184-03) to finish in third-place at the Rod McCravy Invitational. Killen, a sophomore from New Iberia, LA., opened the 2008 season placing second overall in the shot put with a throw of 15.37m (50-05.25) at the Arkansas Invitational.
Riford finished first overall against Nebraska and tied a personal-best with a 590 in air rifle. The sophomore from Kaneohe, Hawaii, also placed fourth in smallbore with a 576. Her aggregate total of 1,166 at Nebraska placed her first in the match. Riford finished second in air rifle with a 582 and smallbore with a 580 against Ole Miss. Her aggregate total of 1,162 was also tops in this match.
