FORT WORTH, Texas - GoFrogs.com recently caught up with Festus Kigen and distance coach Shawn Winget as they head to the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 24.
Start time for the men's race will be at approximately 11:48 a.m. (CT) at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.
Festus Kigen
"With this being my second year competing at nationals, I expect to do good. I am definitely going to do better with my performance this type around because I know the course and I know what it takes to compete in that type of environment. I am very confident."
"This season has been really good for me. I have been running some of my best times of my career and I just need to continue to do the same this Monday."
"Hopefully, I become an All-American this weekend. I have confidence and now I know that I can maintain the right pace during the race. Since I know the course, it gives me a better idea of how I can judge certain parts of the race."
Shawn Winget
"It means a lot to have Festus back at nationals. Last year it was a good learning experience, but now he has expectations. What we are looking for is for him to become an All-American and I think he can do that this Monday. It is a big deal to have TCU competing at the national meet once again. It's a joy to coach Festus, he's an outstanding individual."
"He's more confident and mental tough this year. Overall, he has been injury free this fall and that has really helped build his confidence. He has also been able to get stronger physically, which I believe goes into his confidence level as well. Since he's been there, now he has expectations on himself, which makes all the difference in the world. He wants to run extremely well and wants to prove to himself that he can be an All-American, unlike last year where he was just happy to get to the national meet."
"It obviously helps him that he has competed on the course and knows that the entire field will be together for the first mile and a half. Since he was able to be a part of that last year, it will make a huge difference in his results this time around."
