
TCU Athletics Announces September's Student-Athletes of the Month

The TCU Athletics Department honored football's Jerry Hughes and soccer's Jordan Calhoun as its Student-Athletes of the Month for their outstanding performances for the Horned Frogs in the Month of September.
In only his second collegiate start - Hughes was selected as the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week in the season-opening victory at New Mexico. The TCU defensive end recovered a fumble in each of the opening three games and tops not only the Mountain West Conference, but also is tied for sixth in fumble recoveries in the national rankings. He also added an interception against the Logos as well as versus cross-town rival SMU.
Hughes recorded a career-high 2.5 tackles for loss in a victory over Stanford and notched a season-best seven tackles against then-second ranked Oklahoma. As one of the top defenders of the menacing TCU defense - Hughes ranks in the top-three in five different categories and is tied for the team-lead in forced fumbles and second in sacks and interceptions.
Calhoun gotten off to a tremendous start in her rookie season as the Norman, Okla., talent has scored nine goals on the 2008 campaign. The TCU forward netted goals in four of TCU's seven games during the Month of September and was honored with Mountain West Conference Athlete of the Week laurels to open the season after scoring a pair of goals in a 3-0 victory over Xavier.
Following her two-goal performance against Xavier - Calhoun became the first freshman in TCU history to net back-to-back two-goal outings in the first two games of her career. Against Ole Miss - Calhoun scored the Frogs' final goal of the game sending the contest into overtime, which resulted in a 2-2 tie. Currently - the TCU freshman is ranked first in the Mountain West Conference in goals, goals per game, game-winning goals, points per game and points and ranked 16th in the country in goals per game and 21st in points per game.
Football's Matt Panfil and soccer's Kelsey Walters were recognized as TCU's Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Month for their achievements during the first month of their respective seasons.
A management/marketing major - Panfil ranks fifth among all Mountain West Conference players in tackles for loss and sixth in sacks. The TCU senior is tied for 26th nationally in tackles for loss and 43rd in sacks. He was selected as the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week after the 31-14 victory over Stanford where he rang in four tackles for loss (including two sacks), a forced fumble, fumble recovery and pass break-up.
Walters helped TCU post four shutouts during the Month of September as the goalkeeper for the Frogs. The TCU sophomore has only allowed three goals during the past month and is ranked 29th in the nation in save percentage. The Oklahoma City, Okla., standout has helped the Frogs jump out to their best start in program history with an 8-1-1 overall record.
