The TCU men's golf program will conclude the 2008 portion of its schedule this weekend at the Galloway National Invitational hosted by Columbia University at the Galloway National Golf Club in Atlantic City, N.J.
The Horned Frogs are coming off of their first tournament victory of the season at The Prestige at PGA West where the Purple and White posted a 10-stroke victory over a nationally-ranked field that included Stanford, Washington, Central Florida, UC Davis, Michigan State and Pepperdine - all teams ranked in the top-30 in the country.
After their victory at The Prestige at PGA West - the Frogs made a dramatic leap in the standings from 60th overall to 19th in the latest Golfweek rankings. The Frogs now have four golfers ranked in the top-105 in the country in Johan de Beer (Pretoria, South Africa | Pretoria Boys H.S.), Travis Woolf (Fort Worth, Texas | Paschal H.S.), James Sacheck (The Woodlands, Texas | Zionsville H.S.) and Scott Roudebush (Austin, Texas | Austin H.S.) after the impressive triumph in La Quinta, Calif.
"I'm really proud of this way that our team has played in the fall," said TCU head men's golf coach Bill Montigel. "We've been solid in every tournament, and our goal is to always get to the point where we are playing in the final group on the final day, which we've been able to do. If you are in the final group then you have a shot of winning and that's the goal every time we play."
At the Galloway National Invitational - the Frogs will face their stiffest competition from SEC-power University of Florida, who enters the tournament ranked 21st in the nation. The14-team field will also included Eastern Kentucky, St. John's, Connecticut, Western Illinois and Navy. The Galloway National Golf Club features 6,901 yards of golf with a par set at 71 and was designed by renowned golf architect Tom Fazio.
"This is going to be another test for us because we are paired with Florida in the first round, and they are a top-25 program. The course that we are playing is where the East Regional will be played, and you never know how the rankings and pairings will go, but we could end up at this site at the end of the season. This is a great experience for our guys to play, and our goal remains the same to go out and win," added Montigel.
For the second consecutive tournament - the Frogs will feature the same lineup in de Beer, Woolf, Sacheck, Roudebush and sophomore Tom Hoge (Fargo, N.D. | Fargo South H.S.). This season - the Frogs have had three golfers appear in all four tournaments in Woolf, Sacheck and Hoge where the Purple and White have notched a top-five finish in each event.
De Beer is coming off of his first collegiate victory at The Prestige at PGA West where the TCU newcomer posted two birdies over the final four holes of action to notch a 6-under-par score of 210 (72-70-68) during the 54-hole tournament. The South Africa talent became the fastest golfer under Montigel to post an individual tournament championship as The Prestige at PGA West was de Beer's second collegiate event as a Frog.
"Johan is everything that I thought he would be even before he won the last tournament. He's an extremely hard worker on the golf course and in the classroom and really does everything needed to be successful. He played incredibly well at The Prestige, and it was great to see how relaxed he was in the final round when he was playing for the tournament title," Montigel said.
Two mainstays in the TCU lineup during the fall campaign have been Sacheck and Woolf - who have both finished in the top-20 in each of the team's first three tournaments.
Sacheck recorded a fifth-place finish at The Prestige at PGA West and has notched top-15 showings in every tournament after a 12th-place listing at the Kansas Invitational and 14th-place finish at the Hartford Hawks Invitational.
After tying his TCU teammate at The Prestige at PGA West with a fifth-place showing - Woolf recorded a seventh-place finish at the Kansas Invitational followed by a 17th-place mark at the Hartford Hawks Invitational.
"It's hard to put into words what James and Travis mean to this team. They are both extremely hard workers, and they are models for the rest of the guys on the team. They are both extremely consistent and have played well in every tournament. These guys are true leaders, and you almost come to expect top-20 finishes from them every time out," Montigel said.
After finishing sixth overall - Roudebush followed up his performance at the Hartford Hawks Invitational with a 30th-place showing at The Prestige at PGA West. The TCU junior started off the tournament with an even-par first round score of 72, but struggled in the second round where he posted an 85. Beginning the third round of action tied for 62nd overall - Roudebush recorded a 2-under-par score of 70 and jumped 32 spots to finish tied for 30th overall.
Hoge will be poised to finish the fall campaign on a high note after struggling in each of his last two events where he finished tied for 54th overall at The Prestige at PGA West and 63rd overall at the Hartford Hawks Invitational. The TCU sophomore recorded his best finish of the season in the team's first event with a 17th-place showing at the Kansas Invitational.
The first round of the Galloway National Invitational will begin on Friday (Oct. 24) and will be held over three days in Atlantic City, N.J.
