FORT WORTH, Texas - A spectacular service game from the TCU Horned Frogs spelled disaster for the Air Force Falcons as the Frogs swept them for win No. 16. The 3-0 (25-6, 25-9, 2515) win improved the Frogs to 5-3 after the first round of MWC action. Megan Munce was the star of the match with a conference and school record 12 aces. She tallied 11 alone in the first set.The first set started off a little rocky for the Horned Frogs as the Falcons battled hard, taking a 5-3 lead. A Christy Hudson blast pulled the Frogs back within one and back-to-back kills from Kourtney Edwards gave TCU the lead for good.
Following a Falcon attack error, Munce stepped behind the service line and served out the set. She mixed in two aces around two Falcon errors to give the Frogs an 11-6 lead and forced an Air Force timeout. Five straight aces followed for the lefty as the Falcons couldn't solve the tough jump serve. Nirelle Hampton dropped in a kill then was followed by two more aces from Munce.
An attack error by Air Force kept the Frogs rally rolling and Irene Hester was able to get in on the fun with a kill. She then teamed with Edwards on the outside for a block. Back-to-back aces gave the Frogs set point and Edwards finished the 25-6 win with her third kill of the set.
Four more aces for the Frogs followed in the second set as they ran way with the 25-10 set two victory. Kills from Lauren Otto and Devon Kirk got the Frogs rolling. With Hampton behind the service line, the Frogs got some breathing room as she rolled off six straight points. She dropped in two aces and was helped along by kills from Kirk and Christy Hudson.
The kills kept coming for TCU as they racked up 16 in the set, hitting an astounding .444 with no errors. Munce added to her ace total with another to give the Frogs a 19-6 lead. A block from Hampton and Edwards along with a kill from Hester made it 22-7. A Katelyn Blackwood service ace locked up the win.
It was another big lead by the Frogs that helped them lock up the 3-0 sweep. Blackwood served the Frogs to an 8-2 lead and TCU never looked back en route to the 25-15 win. A balanced attack saw eight different Frogs tally kills. Hannah Fort notched two, as did Hester and Otto. A kill from Sarah Joeckel sealed the victory.
TCU was led by seven kills from Edwards and six from Hester. Hampton pitched in with 23 assists and four digs. Blackwood paced the team defensively with eight digs.
TCU returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 23 against San Diego State. The match will be televised live on The Mtn. All fans are encouraged to wear white to the game as the Frogs will try and break the school attendance record. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at the University Rec Center.
