No. 8 BYU vs. No. 24 TCU
Oct. 16, 2008
Attendance: 36,180
Final: TCU 32, BYU 7
TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson
Opening statement:
"I really thought our coaching staff did a good job of prepping our kids and our guys came out and played hard tonight. You have to give BYU credit, they are a good football team. They have some really special players in Max Hall, Austin Collie and Harvey Unga."
On BYU:
"BYU has been the top team in our conference the last two seasons, and our guys have been focused on them since January. We really wanted to come out and be the best TCU football team that we could be and I think we did that. We knew it would be a big stage, we got some breaks and turnovers, and it worked out well for us."
On the rest of the season:
"We still have a lot of football to play. Utah is a great football team, UNLV is tough at home and Wyoming or Air Force can sneak up on you if you aren't ready to play. I'm going to give our guys some time off, but come Sunday, we will be getting ready for our next game."
TCU Wide Receiver Jeremy Kerley
On the game:
"We wanted to come with some surprises against a team like this. I'm not taking anything away from them, because they are a good football team, but I think we played with some explosion tonight and caught them a little off-guard. This is college football and it is a crazy game. Any team can lose at any time and any team can pull out a win at any time. We are going to go out and play hard every snap. "
On the direct snaps:
"We prepared for it against Colorado State, but we didn't want to bring it out too early if we didn't need to. We have been working on it for a while now, we just felt that this would be a good time to use it."
On the fans:
"We have some great fans. It feels good to look up and see the stands full of people. We feed off of that; it fuels us. Our fans keep us going."
TCU Defensive End Jerry Hughes
On his sacks tonight:
"Coming here as a running back, I feel like I have a big advantage if I use my speed. Their offensive line is (made up of) some big, physical guys and they pushed us hard all night long. Our secondary did a good job of buckling down behind us to give us time to get pressure on the quarterback."
BYU Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall
On BYU's performance:
"We stood in there and battled, but our execution just wasn't there tonight. TCU executed at a much higher level than we did and it obviously showed."
On TCU's passing game:
"It was frustrating because TCU was so effective on third downs and we weren't. We just weren't able to perform at critical moments in the game.
BYU Quarterback Max Hall
On tonight's game:
"This was tough. Anytime you lose a game like that it's tough, and I take a lot of responsibility for this game. We have got to improve and find out who we are."
On TCU's play:
"TCU played a heck of a game tonight. Running the ball, passing the ball and stopping us on offense so my hat goes off to TCU. They played hard, and they deserved the win."
On TCU's defense:
"They were fast, and they got to me. The bottom-line is they were strong, and they forced me into some bad decisions. I thought that I had been fairly good at handling the pressure, but tonight it just got to me. TCU deserves a lot of credit for their performance.
