
TCU announces December award winners

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Athletics Department announced its monthly student-athlete awards for the month of December on Tuesday.The four monthly categories are Male and Female Athlete of the Month and Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month.
On the men's side, Jonathon Berrettini was named the Athlete of the Month, while fellow swimmer Ben Biefnes was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Month.
On the women's side, Adrianne Ross was named the Athlete of the Month and Cheryl Townsend was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Month.
Berrettini, a senior swimmer from Lewisville, Texas, began the month by qualifying for the 2008 NCAA Men's National Championships. Berrettini earned a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 56.69 in the 100-meter back at the Long Course National Championships in Atlanta, Ga. When converted, the time ranks fourth nationally in the NCAA. In addition, Berrettini won the 100-back event at the Las Vegas Invite, as well as contributing to two winning relay teams.
Biefnes, a sophomore on the men's swimming team, had a breakout performance at the Las Vegas Invite, posting three top-six finishes. The Aurora, Colo., native swam to a third-place finish in the 400-IM with a personal-best time of 4:03.61. Biefnes set another personal best the same night with a time of 58.21 to place fifth in the 100-breast.
Ross, a senior guard on the women's basketball team, scored in double figures in five of seven games during December. The Hobbs, N.M., native averaged 16.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.7 steals per game over the seven contests. Ross was named the MWC Player of the Week after scoring a career-high 38 points in an overtime loss at Florida.
Townsend, a junior swimmer from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, qualified for two final events at the Las Vegas Invite. Townsend placed 18th out of 50 competitors in the 400-IM with a time of 4:38.81, and finished 14th out of 64 swimmers in the 200-back with a time of 2:07.97.
