FORT WORTH--TCU looks to even its season record during its final non-conference matchup of the season Friday, as the Lady Frogs play host to cross-town rival UT Arlington at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The 6:30 p.m. contest marks the second leg of a three-game homestand.
The Frogs are coming off their fourth 30-point victory of the season, a 83-51 win over Grambling State last Saturday, and hope to build momentum heading into Mountain West Conference play.
TCU currently owns an 11-game winning streak over UT Arlington dating back to the 1986-87 season and holds a 14-9 advantage all-time over the Mavericks. Despite the current streak, the series has been competitive with only three of the games decided by more than 20 points. The Frogs earned a four-point win, 71-67, last season after erasing a halftime deficit.
Saturday's game can be heard live on the radio in the Metroplex on 88.7 KTCU-FM with Jeff Williams (play-by-play) and Marcy Girton (color) calling the action. All games this season, home and away, will be broadcast live on KTCU. Live statistics and a free video stream of the event will be available on GoFrogs.com.
Senior forward Jenna Lohse is scheduled to sign autographs following the game on the east side of the DMC concourse.
Frog Quick Notes
-TCU owns a 16-game winning streak against members of the Southland Conference. The Frogs are 13-0 against the SLC under Head Coach Jeff Mittie.
-Four of TCU's victories, including each of the last three wins, have been by 30 points or more. The squad's smallest margin of victory this season was 11 points against Radford.
-TCU has won the turnover battle in 10 of 13 games, and only Texas A&M has committed fewer turnovers than the Frogs in a contest.
-The Frogs lead the Mountain West Conference in rebounds (39.7 pg) and offensive rebounds (16.92 pg) and rank second in steals (11.46 pg), turnover margin (+5.15) and 3-pointers (5.38 pg).
-Adrianne Ross is only two steals shy of the TCU career record (284).
-Ross needs only 26 more points to move into second place on TCU's career scoring chart.
-Ross is the only player among the MWC's top 8 individuals in scoring, assists and steals.
-Helena Sverrisdottir is the only freshman to appear in the MWC statistical rankings for assists (14th), rebounds (18th) and scoring (28th).
-Emily Carter leads the MWC in free-throw percentage at .931 (27-of-29).
-Lorie Butler-Rayford is only two field goals shy of 300 and only two assists shy of 200 for her career.
-The senior class of Butler-Rayford, Knight, Jenna Lohse, Helen Roden and Adrianne Ross have combined for 3,180 points, 1,546 rebounds, 907 assists and 632 steals during their careers.
Scouting UT Arlington (5-5)
UT Arlington, which last season earned its second NCAA Tournament appearance in three years, owns a 5-5 record this season under first-year head coach Samantha Morrow. Last season's Maverick squad recorded a 16-0 record in the Southland Conference on its way to the Big Dance.
UTA's contest against TCU will be its eighth on the road in its first 11 games. The Mavericks and Frogs share common opponents in SMU and Texas A&M, as each squad fell to both the Mustangs and Aggies. UTA averages 67.3 ppg as a team and has outrebounded opponents (42.1 to 41.1 pg) in addition to forcing more turnovers (204 to 203).
Individually, senior guard Maryann Abanobi leads the squad in scoring with a 15.9-point average and is shooting .512 from the field and .913 from the free-throw line. Junior forward Candace Champion, who boasts a team-best 8.1-rebound average, is scoring 9.7 ppg, while freshman forward Shalyn Martin has added a 9.0-point average in addition to leading the team with 14 blocked shots. Guard Tamara Simmons, another freshman, has helped fuel the UTA attack with 3.4 assists per game.
Wins Coming Big in `07-08
Each of TCU's six wins this season has come by at least 11 points. Four of the Frogs' six victories are by at least 30 points, including each of the last three wins (Coppin State, Oklahoma State and Grambling State). The large winning margins have helped the squad post a +6.0-point scoring average despite a sub-.500 record.
Tracking Turnovers
TCU is up to its usual tricks in the ball-handling department, as it has won the turnover battle in 10 of its 13 games this season while twice matching the opponent. Only Texas A&M has committed fewer turnovers than the Frogs in a game. For the season, the team is averaging only 17.2 turnovers per game compared to its opponents' average of 22.3.
A favorable turnover margin is nothing new for TCU. Since the start of the 2005-06 campaign, the Lady Frogs are +364 in the category for a single-game average margin of +4.8. TCU has found itself on the opposite end of the statistic in only 13 of 76 games during the stretch.
