Women's tennis earns ITA All-Academic Team Award

FORT WORTH, Texas - For the third consecutive year, the TCU women's tennis team has earned the ITA All-Academic Team Award, while five players were named ITA Scholar-Athletes for the 2006-07 school year.
"As much emphasis as we put on academics with our program here at TCU, I have to say the individual efforts of each player on the team ultimately determines this award," said TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "I'm very proud of our young ladies, as this is the third straight year that we have been nominated to the ITA-All Academic Team."
To be considered for the team award, the ITA program has to earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). Other than TCU, only a quarter of the teams that finished in the Fila/ITA top 40 this season received the All-Academic Team Award.
Melissa Beré, Macall Harkins, Karine Ionesco, Nicole Leimbach and Gabby Lopez were all named ITA Scholar-Athletes. The accolade was the second for Lopez, who also earned the honor in 2005.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of a least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
"We are fortunate that we have student-athletes who understand that doing well in the classroom, on the tennis court, and in life all go hand in hand," added Hammond.
