
TCU announces January award winners

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Athletics Department announced its student-athlete awards for the month of January on Tuesday.
The four monthly categories are Male and Female Athlete of the Month and Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month.
On the men's side, Trey Jordan earned the Male Athlete of the Month award, while Cosmin Cotet was named the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month.
For the women, Erica Tate was named the Female Athlete of the Month and Hanna Biernacka was tabbed as the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month.
Jordan, a freshman thrower on the men's track and field team, won the shot put title in his very first meet with a throw of 54-11.50 (16.75m) at the Arkansas Invitational on Jan. 12. A native of Troy, Texas, Jordan had a career-long toss of 55-07.00 (16.94m) and placed third at the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 19.
Cotet, a junior on the men's tennis team, defeated Gary Bianco of UT-Pan American 6-0, 6-1, playing in the No. 1 slot for the first time in his TCU career. Cotet also teamed up with Stuart Row to defeat the UTPA duo of Vij and Cantu 8-4, clinching the doubles point. Against No.23 Clemson, Cotet teamed up with Kriegler Brink to upset the duo of Clement Reix and Ryan Young 8-6.
Tate, a senior swimmer, totaled four individual and four relay wins for the month of January. Tate kicked off the spring season against Northern Arizona, recording a win in the 50-free as the Frogs cruised to victory. The Grapevine, Texas, native accounted for three wins against New Mexico, taking the top spot in the 50-free with a time of 23.80, and participating in the winning 400-medley and 400-free relay teams. Tate took part in four victories against mid-major No. 24 North Texas, capturing the 50-free (23.69) and 100-fly (57.17), and also leading the Frogs' in the 200-free and 200-medley relays.
Biernacka, a senior forward on the women's basketball team, averaged 12.2 points and 4.3 rebounds in seven games in the month of January. On Jan. 3, Biernacka scored a career-high 26 points on 13-of-19 shooting to lead TCU to an 88-63 victory of UNLV. Biernacka also paced TCU with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting at Utah on Jan. 18. The Stockholm, Sweden, native helped TCU finish with a 5-2 record during the month and a No. 23 ranking in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll on Jan. 15.
