FORT WORTH, Texas -- Former TCU standout and reigning National Fooball League Most Valuable Player LaDainian Tomlinson will be featured Sunday on CBS's 60 Minutes. The show airs at 6 p.m. Central.
Tomlinson won the Doak Walker Award in 2000 as the nation's top running back. He is the Horned Frogs' all-time leading rusher with 5,263 yards while owning 14 of TCU's 17 rushing records. He also holds the NCAA single-game rushing mark with 406 yards on 43 carries against UTEP in 1999.
Tomlinson is in his seventh year with the San Diego Chargers. He recently helped distribute Thanksgiving meals to 2,000 families. He also provides college scholarships to seniors at his high school alma mater (University in Waco, Texas). Additionally, Tomlinson runs a charity golf tournament and hands out bikes and shoes to underprivileged children.
"What I do off the field is definitely more important," Tomlinson said. "People may remember something I did on the field for a couple of days, maybe a week, but the things that we do in the community is something that people remember for the rest of their lives."
Tomlinson buys 21 tickets (his jersey number) to all Charger home games for children who cannot afford them.
The 60 Minutes feature also includes an interview with Tomlinson's mother, Lorene Chappell. Tomlinson says she taught him to be altruistic and to "aim high and always reach for the stars."
