FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frog volleyball will continue jockeying for position in the upcoming Mountain West Conference tournament with two pivotal road matches out West. The Frog will try and go for the series sweep of San Diego State on Friday followed by a date with UNLV on Saturday. Game time for both matches will be 9 p.m. (CST).
TCU vs. San Diego State Series History
The Frogs road trip commences with a match-up against San Diego State, a team they defeated earlier this season in five games. TCU had the early 2-0 advantage in the match, but had to hold on for the five-game victory. After losing the first four meetings between the schools, the Frogs have taken two of the last three. In the last two seasons, each team has held serve on its home court.
TCU vs. UNLV Series History
The Frogs will try and get over the hump against UNLV this weekend as they are still searching for their first win against the Rebels as members of the Mountain West Conference. TCU's lone win in the series came back in 1998 with a 3-2 win in Fort Worth. The Frogs fell in three games earlier this season in Fort Worth. The Rebels enter the weekend ranked No. 25 in the country and will be the second ranked opponent the Frogs will face this season. Two others are now appearing in the poll as Colorado State ranks 18th and Oklahoma 23rd.
On The Road Again
TCU hits the road for the final time in the regular season. The Frogs have enjoyed some success on the road this season with a 4-6 overall record away from home. LeMeita Smith is the leading hitter, averaging 3.5 kills per game. Calli Corley paces the team with almost five digs per game.
Let's Make It An Even 20
Head Coach Prentice Lewis guided her team to its third 20-win season in school history, all under her direction, as the Frogs claimed the milestone victory Friday against Utah. The Frogs previously won 20 in 2003 and followed with a school-record 23 the following season.
A Quick Climber
In just two seasons of action, Kourtney Edwards is already climbing the career charts for blocks. Her next block will give her sole possession of sixth place on the list with 251. She has racked up at least 100 blocks in each of her two seasons and currently has 137 this season. She also leads the way with 25 solo blocks in 2007.
Finishing Up Strong
LeMeita Smith has been a steady component of the Horned Frog offense this season. She will leave her mark on the record books, ranking in the top 10 of most offensive categories.
Never Out Of It
Trailing 0-2 in a match is a tough thing to rebound from, but the Horned Frog have proven that it can be done. They have tallied 36 victories in matches that have gone the distance and 10 of those wins have come when trailing 0-2 in a match. The Frogs recovered from a two-game deficit against Utah last weekend.
Goin' The Distance
Seven times this season, the Frogs have gone the distance in matches and six of the seven times, the Frogs have come out on the positive side with victories. They have five-set victories over Florida Gulf Coast, Cincinnati, Denver, Utah SDSU and New Mexico. They are 37-26 (.583) all-time in matches that go to game No. 5.
The Chase Is On
Nirelle Hampton is chasing history on her own. She needs just six more aces to tie Anna Vaughn atop the leader board. She currently has 135 aces, one behind Tori Barlow for second all-time.
