FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's swimming team will kick off the 2007-08 season on Wednesday at the Mean Green Relays at the Pohl Recreation Center in Denton, Texas, at 4 p.m. The meet will consist of 10 different relay events against North Texas and SMU.
Last season, the women's squad ended with a 13-4 overall dual meet record and placed sixth at the MWC Championships. Departed senior Erica Tate set a new school record in the 50-free (23.17), while Cheryl Townsend became the first TCU women's swimmer to win a MWC individual championship, taking the top spot in the 400-IM (4:24.60).
The Frogs return four seniors with Maribeth Pottenger, Michelle Pottenger, Amanda Skinner and Keilah Walker. TCU loses 11 letterwinners from last season, including eight seniors, but add 11 freshmen in a very deep and talented incoming class.
The meet will began with the 300-fly relay, followed by the 300-back relay, 300-breast relay and 800-free relay. After a 15-minute break, the swimmers will compete in the 500-free relay, 400-medley relay, 200-free relay and 1500-free relay. After another 15-minute intermission, the swimmers will cap off the event with the 400-IM relay and 400-free relay.
The TCU women are 16-0 against North Texas in dual meets dating back to the 1998-99 season. Both teams met twice last season, as TCU escaped with a 79-61 victory in Fort Worth before earning an 83-48 rout in Denton. The Frogs have not faced SMU since both teams competed against each other in Conference USA action.
