White evens series at one with 7-0 victory

FORT WORTH, Texas - Four pitchers for the White squad tossed a five-hit shut out to help them top the Purple squad, 7-0, and even the series at a game apiece Saturday afternoon. Newcomer Chris Ellington hit a two-run home run in the fourth to help propel the White team to victory. Matt Carpenter was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs driven in for White.Freshman Greg Holle gave the fans a taste of things to come this spring as he tossed 4 2/3 shutout innings in helping the White team even the series. He allowed just two hits, walked two and struck out four.
Purple looked poised to take an early lead in the second inning as they had a runner on third with one out. After a walk put runners on the corners, Holle got a ground ball out and struck out Zac Jordan to end the threat.
Chris Ellington provided the spark for the White team in the fourth to break the scoreless tie. Hunt Woodruff singled with two outs and Ellington homered to put the White squad up 2-0.
A four-run sixth inning for the White team broke the game open. Matt McGuirk singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second when Woodruff was hit by the pitch. Jimmie Pharr singled to drive in Woodruff and Eric Givens tallied the second RBI of the inning with a base hit up the middle. A Carpenter double plated two runs as White took a commanding 6-0 lead.
Purple was unable to mount an attack against the White bullpen and Gabe Sandersius, Eric Marshall and Paul Gerrish tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings.
White tacked on an unearned run in the eighth inning to account for the final score.
Derek VerHagen was charged with the loss as he surrendered two runs on four hits. He walked just one batter while striking out seven.
The World Series will continue next weekend with three more contests.
