Flyin' Frogs open season with strong showing at Arkansas Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The TCU track and field team opened its 2007 campaign on Friday with a solid performance that included three first-place finishes and an NCAA provisional mark at the Arkansas Invitational.
"The bottom line is that with this being my third year here (TCU), I thought we had more people compete and I don't mean just compete, but compete hard tonight than we've had since I've been here," head coach Darryl Anderson said."
The Flyin' Frogs put forth their finest performance in the field events by sweeping both the men's and women's shot put titles and winning the men's triple jump.
Headlining TCU's first-place finishes was Jonathan Jackson's performance in the triple jump, where the Grand Prairie, Texas, native earned an NCAA provisional mark by posting a career-best indoor leap of 15.63m (51-03.50). Jackson's mark topped Arkansas' Nkosinza Balumba, who leaped 15.58m (51-01.50).
In the men's shot put freshman Trey Jordan won his first collegiate event with a toss of 16.75m (54-11.50). Jordan topped Ole Miss' Derek McGuire who had a throw of 16.41m (53-10.25).
After sweeping the Mountain West Conference Indoor and Outdoor titles in the shot put as a freshman, Candis Kelley began her sophomore season with a bang by winning the event with a toss of 14.47m (47-05.75). Finishing runner-up was Arkansas' Michelle Russio with a throw of 14.16m (46-05.50). TCU senior Zelma Wade earned a top-five finish by placing fifth with a throw of 13.59m (44-07.00).
In total the Flyin' Frogs earned 11 top-five finishes - seven women and four men.
"Obviously, we lost some fitness over the Christmas holiday, but that is going to happen and we are focusing toward building that back up and are working toward the conference meet," Anderson said. "We will get ourselves ready to go and will be fine once conference time comes around. There are areas where we need to make progress, but I know we will be ready to go."
On the women's side, Virgil Hodge finished fourth in a highly-competitive field in the 60 meters with a time of 7.49. In the 200 meters, Deborah Jones and Jamee Jones finished fourth and fifth with times of 24.83 and 24.94, respectively.
In distance events, the Flyin' Frogs had a pair of top-five showings with freshman Danielle Selner finishing fifth in the mile run with a time of 5:05.89 and senior McKale Davis posting a career-best time of 10:11.12 to place second in the unseeded men's 3000 meters.
On the men's side, Delwayne Delaney placed fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 21.60 and freshman Festus Kigen finished fourth in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:16.79.
Up next, the Flyin' Frogs will split squads and will compete at the Razorback Invitational and Houston Invitational on Jan. 19-20.
