TCU runs well at Cowboy Jamboree; Stewart places fourth

STILLWATER, Okla. - Competing in its most competitive meet to date, the TCU men's and women's cross country teams finished sixth and third, respectively at the Cowboy Jamboree held at the Oklahoma State Cross Country Course on Saturday.
In what was the 70th annual Cowboy Jamboree, Calandra Stewart paced both the men and women for TCU with a fourth-place finish in the women's 5K. Stewart's fourth-place finish was the second scoring position..
Stewart combined with Carlene Mayfield, who placed 11th with a time of 18:11, to help the Horned Frogs tally 81 points and finish just two points behind second-place Wichita State in the 25-team field. Oklahoma State won the women's team title with 49 points.
"We are happy, but not satisfied with our results today," head coach Eric Heins said. "We got beat by a good Wichita State team, but it was just by two points. We could have done better in the three and four spots, which is what set us apart from Wichita State. We are coming away happy because we made a lot of improvements from North Texas but we still have room to work before NCAA Pre-Nationals.
"I am very happy with the way Calandra (Stewart) ran. She ran exactly how she needed to. Her time was one minute better than it was for her last time she was here."
On the men's side, the Horned Frogs finished sixth out of 21 teams in the men's 8K and were led by Festus Kigen and Matt Manly, who placed 27th and 38th, respectively.
Kigen entered the meet coming off a victory at the Texas A&M Invitational, which enabled him to earn the Mountain West Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
"The course is really challenging," Heins said. "Festus (Kigen) got out too a fast start by running with a lot of fellow Kenyans. Unfortunately, he faded at the end and it just comes back to him learning and knowing how hard to push himself.
"Matt (Manly) is really consistent. He has put in the miles over the summer and it is paying off. It is nice to know that every meet we know what he is going to give us."
Kigen posted a time of 25:45, while Manly finished in a time of 26:13.
Arkansas won the men's title. Abilene Christian placed second.
The women's team will next compete at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., on Oct. 14, while the men will not run again until the Mountain West Conference Championships in Salt Lake City on Oct. 28.
