FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs dropped a 3-0 (30-18, 30-23, 30-25) decision to UNLV Friday night at the University Rec Center. Despite out-blocking the Rebels 9-4, the Frogs hit for just a .120 average as a team. Anna Vaughn led all hitters with 15 kills. Calli Corley paced the Frogs defensively with 12 digs.Four ties and two lead changes highlighted a game one that quickly got away from the Frogs. The Rebels opened up an 11-8 advantage on a Brittani Lumsden kill before the Frogs were able to creep back in. TCU eventually got the game tied at 12 on a Nirelle Hampton kill. From there, the Rebels put together an 18-6 rally to close out the game.
Lumsden put down six kills in the set as the Rebels hit .333 (16-4-36) as a team. For the Frogs, Vaughn tallied four kills, but they couldn't overcome the 13 errors they committed in the game.
Game two played out similarly to the first as the Rebels took control early on. A Hampton ace knotted the game at seven, but they could never gain the lead as the Rebels had an answer for everything. TCU would pull as close as four on numerous occasions, but UNLV wouldn't allow them to get any closer as they took game two, 30-23.
Vaughn's six kills in the set and four blocks by the defense weren't enough. The Rebels were paced by Maria Aladjova's six kills.
The Frogs let game three slip through their fingers as they had a late lead. The teams battled through 11 ties and seven lead changes, before UNLV finally grabbed control with the game tied at 22.
Behind the serving of Vaughn, the Frogs turned a 4-4 tie into an 11-6 advantage. An ace and a kill by Vaughn mixed in with two kills by Kourtney Edwards helped TCU build the lead. A Rebel timeout killed the Frog momentum and they would pull within two, 12-10. Following a service error by TCU, UNLV went on a 3-0 run to take a 13-12 lead. A Vaughn and Gabi McHugh block stopped the rally and tied the game at 13.
The see-saw battle continued as neither team could build more than a two-point cushion. With things knotted at 22, Lumsden gave the Rebels a lead they would never relinquish with a kill. UNLV closed out the match on an 8-3 run. An Aladjova blast gave the Rebels the 30-25 game three victory.
The loss drops the Frogs record to 13-4 overall and 2-2 in Mountain West play. TCU returns to action on Saturday when they host San Diego State at 7 p.m. The match can be heard live on KTCU 88.7 FM.
