FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU junior golfer Drew Stoltz and freshman tennis player Anna Sydorska are the recipients of TCU's Student-Athlete of the Week awards, the athletic department has announced. It is Stoltz's first such honor, while Sydorska earned the award for the second time.
Over the weekend, Stoltz placed in a tie for 30th individually at the NCAA Central Regional to match the best finish on the team. The Fort Collins, Colo., native played 7-over-par golf over the 54-hole event and posted his best round of the tournament on the final day, a 1-over 72. The 14th-seeded Horned Frogs landed just five strokes shy of receiving the final bid to the 2006 NCAA Championships. It was the second straight year that Stoltz paced the Frogs at regionals.
Last week, Sydorska and the TCU women's tennis team completed the most successful season in school history after falling to top-ranked and eventual national champion Stanford in the Frogs' first-ever NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance. Sydorska and sophomore Andrea Morgado owned a 6-5 lead in doubles against the 22nd-ranked Stanford team at Court No. 2 before the clinching doubles point at No. 3 halted the match. Sydorska, ranked 115th nationally, finished her rookie campaign with a record of 24-8 in singles action. The Lviv, Ukraine, product received Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year and ITA Southwest Region Freshman of the Year plaudits after helping the Frogs claim the MWC regular-season and tournament titles.
