ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The TCU Horned Frogs won their sixth straight game with a 13-9 win over New Mexico Friday afternoon at Isotopes Park. TCU pounded out 20 hits in the win with all nine starters picking up at least one base knock. Four Frogs had three hits in the contest, while two others had two. Six different Frogs recorded at least one RBI. Chad Huffman and Corey Steglich each drove in four runs and Brad Furnish won his seventh game of the year with five scoreless innings pitched.
With the game knotted at zero after three innings, the Horned Frog bats came alive in the fourth. New Mexico starter Danny Ray Herrera left the game after the third inning due to a limited pitch count and gave way to Darren Coltrinari. Huffman greeted Coltrinari with his 15th home run of the season, giving the Frogs a 1-0 lead after four.
A six-run fifth inning broke the game open. Nine straight Frogs reached base with the only out being recorded on the base paths as Huffman was caught stealing. Ryan Pack got the inning started with a double to the gap in left center. A Bryan Kervin single moved Pack to third and Kervin took second on the throw to the plate. Steven Trout smoked a line drive double over the third baseman's head to clear the bases and later scored on a Huffman base hit. After a single by Austin Adams, Keith Conlon was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Corey Steglich, who extended his hit streak to 12 games with a two-run single to center. Hunt Woodruff drove in the Frogs seventh run of the game with his first hit of the game.
Brad Furnish (7-5) gave way to Chase Perry in the sixth inning. He allowed just two hits, struck out three and walked three in five innings.
A solo home run by Ryan Barba to lead off the sixth got the Lobos on the board.
Another six-run inning gave the Frogs some breathing room as they opened up a 13-3 after eight. Once again, the first nine batters reached base with the lone runner being erased on the bases. Woodruff started the rally with a lead-off double and scored on a Pack base hit. Trout was hit by a one-out pitch to put two runners on for Huffman, who cleared them with his second triple of the season. Adams walked setting up an RBI-single off the bat of Conlon, ending Lobo reliever Damon Miller's afternoon. Jordan Salazar walked the first batter he saw and Steglich doubled to drive in two more runs.
New Mexico pushed across two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run double by Daniel Stovall to make it 13-3. Dillon Farish came on in relief of Perry with runners on first and third, getting pinch-hitter Brandon Bingham to strike out and Jay Russell to line out, ending the threat.
The Lobos tried to mount a ninth-inning rally, only to see it fall four runs short. Taylor Cragin retired the first batter of the inning, but an error allowed pinch-hitter Dane Hamilton to reach. Following the error, the next five batters reached base. Barba drove in the Lobos fourth run of the game and Ian Hollick lined a grand slam over the left field wall to pull New Mexico within four, 13-9. Omar Arif shut the door, retiring the final two batters of the game.
The Frogs improve to 34-21 overall and 16-5 in conference play. TCU will go for the sweep Saturday afternoon in the final game of the regular season. Game time is set for 1 p.m. (CST).
