FT. WORTH, Texas - Sophomore Otis McDaniel of the men's track team and Helena Besovic, a senior on the women's tennis team, have been recognized as the TCU Student-Athletes of the Week. The award is the first for McDaniel, while Besovic collects her second.
Named the outstanding male performer at last week's Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, McDaniel claimed three gold medals - two individual and one team.
A native of San Antonio, Texas, McDaniel was crowned the conference champion in both the 100 and 200 meters, and anchored the winning 4x100 relay team. He posted personal-best marks in the 100 meters (10.29) and 200 meters (20.35), and established a new MWC meet and all-time record in the 200 meters.
Besovic posted a 3-0 record during the opening rounds of the 2006 NCAA Tournament last weekend to help propel the Horned Frogs to their first-ever Sweet 16 berth. On Friday night versus Conference USA champion Rice, Besovic downed Christine Dao 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. The following evening, the senior teamed with junior Ana Cetnik to post an 8-4 victory over 44th-ranked Mia Marovic and Courtney Zauft of No. 18 Texas.
Besovic finished the match with a win against 104th-ranked Petra Dizdar at No. 2 to run her singles win streak total to 19 matches. The Sarajevo, Bosnia, product is currently ranked 18th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles poll and 14 in doubles with Cetnik. She also holds the No. 21 spot in paired action alongside freshman Anna Sydorska.
