NEW YORK -- Cornerback Drew Coleman was selected by the New York Jets in the sixth round, giving TCU three players taken Sunday in the National Football League draft.Wide receiver Cory Rodgers went in the fourth round to Green Bay, while offensive tackle Michael Toudouze was a fifth-round selection by Indianapolis.
TCU has now had 14 players drafted in the five-year tenure of head coach Gary Patterson.
The three players drafted this year represent TCU's highest total since six were selected in 2001. Coleman is the first defensive back under Patterson to be drafted since safety Curtis Fuller was taken by Seattle in the fourth round in 2001.
Coleman, the 20th pick in the sixth round and 189th overall, was an All-Mountain West Conference selection in 2005. His eight pass breakups tied for tops on the Horned Frogs. He placed among the MWC leaders with 12 passes defended (eight PBUs, four interceptions). Coleman's four picks tied for second on TCU and came in wins over Oklahoma, Army, Air Force and UNLV. He had 31 solo stops among his 36 tackles on the year.
A native of Henderson, Texas, Coleman recovered two fumbles, including one to set up a touchdown in the EV1.net Houston Bowl win over Iowa State. He recorded two pass breakups in wins against Oklahoma and San Diego State. Coleman totaled a season-best seven tackles versus Army while adding a 53-yard return with his interception against the Black Knights.
Coleman's pick at Air Force came in the end zone on the opening drive of the game. He recovered a fumble to go with a pass breakup and three tackles in a victory over New Mexico.
Coleman appeared in six games, starting three, after battling injury in the 2004 campaign. He played his first two seasons at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas.
