PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The 2006 Penn Relays came to an end Saturday with the Flyin' Frog men bringing home a silver and a bronze medal in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays, respectively. In addition, seniors Kip Kangogo and Calandra Stewart turned in strong individual efforts in their respective divisions.
"The weekend has been an outstanding one for us," TCU track and field head coach Darryl Anderson said. "The Penn Relays was exceptional again this year. We performed very well against top teams from our region and several of our athletes turned in season-best times in the their events. Everyone has been performing better with every meet, and our performances this weekend will help with our preparation for the upcoming conference and regional championships."
TCU started off the day again in the men's 4x100 meter relay. After winning their heat the previous day to qualify for the finals on Saturday, the team of Bradley Reed, Justyn Warner, Delwayne Delaney and Otis McDaniel posted a season-best 39.89 for a solid third-place finish in the College Men 4x100 Championship of America race.
The Frog men took home another team medal, a silver in the 4x400 meter relay. Che Chavez, Delaney, Jackson Langat and Lewis Banda teamed up in the College Men 4x400 Championship of America race to place second with a time of 3:05.45.
In the individuals' competition, Kangogo and Stewart performed well in their respective divisions of the Olympic Development Mile Run. Kangogo covered the oval in 4:06.14 and finished fourth overall, while Stewart came in fifth with a personal-best 4:45.24 time.
"Today was a big break for Calandra (Stewart)," coach Anderson said. "She had a career-best performance, elevating her to the next level where she can get into the NCAA championships."
The TCU women's 4x400 quartet of Marquita Davis, Deborah Jones, Kishelle Paul and Nathandra John endured a setback when the baton was dropped during an exchange. The foursome was able to continue, but found themselves out of contention as they crossed the line in 3:41.27.
While TCU returns to the track May 5-6 with a small group of athletes competing in the UTA Open in Arlington, Texas, the Frogs will have their sights set on the upcoming Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The league meet will take place May 13-14, in Provo, Utah.
