
TCU announces its February award recipients

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Baseball's Brad Furnish and track and field's Virgil Hodge have been named TCU's Male and Female February Student-Athletes of the Month, while basketball's David Markley and track and field's Gina Messamer are the TCU Scholar-Athletes of the Month.Furnish was a consensus National Pitcher of the Week after tossing a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a 13-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin (Feb. 19). Furnish came back the next weekend with two saves in a pair of TCU wins over Wright State (Feb. 25-26). For the month, the Allen, Texas, native posted a 2.03 ERA with 23 strikeouts while limiting opponents to a .146 batting average.
Hodge, a sophomore from St. Kitts, Caribbean, earned a pair of gold medals and a bronze medal at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. She was named to the 2006 All-MWC team after winning the 60 and 200-meter events. Hodge was also a member of the record-setting 4x400 meter relay team.
To be eligible for TCU Scholar-Athlete of the Month recognition, student-athletes must have a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average.
Markley, a senior from Grapevine, Texas, is majoring in psychosocial kinesiology. He saw action in four February games for the Frogs.
Messamer turned in a pair of top-five finishes in the 800 meters at the Wes Kittley 6 Way and the Red Raider Invitational. The freshman from Oskaloosa, Iowa, is majoring in marketing with minor in political science.
