TCU women's golf heads to California

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU women's golf team begins play Monday at the Northwestern Invitational in Rancho Mirage, Calif.The Big 10 Wildcats from Evanston, Ill., are hosting the tournament at the Gary Player Signature Course at the Westin Mission Hills Resort, ranked by Golf Digest as one of the top 75 golf resorts in the United States. The course is also the site of the LPGA Kraft Nabisco Championship.
The 14-team field features eight of the top 50 programs in the nation, including No. 23 Kent State, No. 25 SMU, No. 27 Michigan State, No. 28 Baylor, No. 32 UC Irvine, No. 35 TCU, No. 43 Northwestern and No. 49 Penn State. Colorado, Iowa State, Michigan, Northern Illinois, Texas Tech and Western Michigan will also participate.
Following Sunday's practice round, the 54-hole event will consist of 36 holes Monday and 18 Tuesday.
The Frogs, who have posted four top-five finishes in their last six tournaments, are seventh nationally in par-3 scoring (3.17) and 11th in fairways hit (76.0 percent).
Camille Blackerby, ranked 76th nationally among individuals, leads the TCU contingent. The Breckenridge, Texas, native has a team-best 75.0 stroke average. She's followed by fellow juniors Catherine Matranga (75.8) and Elin Emanuelsson (76.5).
Matranga is tied for the national lead with three eagles.
Following the Northwestern Invitational, TCU's next competition will be April 20-22 at the Mountain West Conference Championship in St. George, Utah.
