DURHAM, N.C. - USA Baseball announced today that TCU baseball head coach Jim Schlossnagle will serve as an assistant coach on the 2006 USA Baseball National Team that will compete internationally this summer. Schlossnagle becomes the first-ever TCU player or coach to serve in any capacity with USA Baseball.
"In my opinion, being a part of the USA National Team coaching staff is one of the highest honors that a college coach can achieve," said Schlossnagle. "Although my total focus right now is to continue to elevate our program at TCU, I look forward to the opportunity to represent our great country in international play this summer."
Mark Machtolf of Gonzaga University and Tom Slater of Auburn University will also serve as assistant coaches. They will each assist 2006 Team USA Head Coach Tim Corbin of Vanderbilt University.
"USA Baseball is extremely fortunate to have each one of these outstanding coaches dedicate their summer to our program," said Eric Campbell, USA Baseball General Manager of National Teams.
Schlossnagle's presence at TCU has already been felt in just three seasons as the head of the program. In his first two seasons, Schlossnagle has led the Frogs to school record win totals of 39 and 41, TCU's first back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances, and two Conference USA Championships. The 2004 C-USA tournament championship was the first ever by a TCU squad. Prior to his time at TCU, Schlossnagle spent two years as head coach of the UNLV baseball program. In just two seasons, the Rebels owned a 77-47 record under Schlossnagle, including a 47-17 mark in 2003. For that year, he was recognized as the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Rebels to the regular season and conference tournament titles as well as the finals of the NCAA Tempe Regional. He became the first UNLV skipper ever voted league Coach of the Year, and the team's regular season championship was the first outright title in school history. In addition, the Rebels' tourney crown was their first in the MWC.
In June, USA Baseball will invite 34 of the nation's top freshman and sophomore collegiate players to the USA Baseball National Team Trials. After the team is selected, Corbin will guide Team USA through their fourth summer of play at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, and end the summer competing in the III FISU World University Baseball Championships in Havana, Cuba. Team USA will also compete in the 35th Annual USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series (sites TBD), and several International Friendship Series. The entire 2006 USA Baseball National Team game schedule will be announced at a later date.
